Buying handgun in Montana
« on: October 02, 2015, 08:10:57 PM »
I will be working in Libby in a couple weeks and thought I might check out the prices on handguns.  My question is being a non-resident is there a waiting period and do I have to go through an FFL.  In my reading it said there is no waiting period but I am assuming that meant for residents.  Does having my CCW make a difference?

Thanks.

You will have to have them send it to a ffl here in Washington and there will be tax on it when it comes into the state. The dealer will charge a transfer fee as well.

Supposedly its a felony to purchase a gun crossing a state line to do so... Unless you ship it back and deal with your states own BS. :twocents:

www.gungenie.com/www.davidsonsgalleryofguns.com is the best way I've found to buy any gun and have it transferred into this state. No dealer I know of can beat their prices, not even close. Taxes, transfer etc all taken care of.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

LittleJohn I work for Rosauers and will be there training the store on a new register system.  I was in Bozeman last week thinking I would take a look but didn't even have a chance to check out any shops.

I was thinking with no tax and a more gun friendly state I meant score a deal but with having to transfer and then get taxed better off to support local like was suggested.  Should probably save the $ anyways. :(

Sorry, that is not true. Handgun, rifle or shotgun can not cross ANY state line for purchase without going through a FFL dealer in the receiving state. That is a Federal Crime. If you are hunting in another state and are returning to your state of residence there is no problem crossing state lines. You can not drive to Portland and buy a rifle and cross back over the river to bring it home. Plus the dealer selling it to you is bound by laws that you have to be a resident of the state of purchase. You legally can not even make a private purchase and bring it home. You are not a resident of that sate. What ever the receiving state is, it HAS to go through a dealer if it a legal over the counter purchase.

Is this a new law?
Can you direct me to where you found out about it?

The guys at the sporting goods store here in MT said he could buy a shotgun or rifle and take it anywhere he wanted resident or non-resident.

Cant buy a pistol as a non-resident without going through an FFL

I am sure they know what they are talking about
They sell a lot of guns to a lot of summer tourists  :)
