Daypack / pack board?
«
on:
October 04, 2015, 12:19:57 PM »
Ignorant and not really knowing what I'm looking for I am hoping to find a pack that I could use as a daypack and also convert to packing out meat while out in the field.
I'm hoping this can save one trip to the truck and back as I could pack out a quarter my first time coming out the woods. Are there any packs out there that do this and would still be comfortable to use as a daypack 100% of the time.

I use a day pack tied onto a vietnam era pack frame,I've packed many a deer an elk out ,boned out and quartered. cost $50. I've used it for 30 yr's, sure there are better one's to buy .But for me it's what I like.. I'll tell you, where we hunt at as the yr's have gone by, hunters have seen us packing out,and now we don't hunt in those spot's because everyone else learned from us.

Mystery ranch, KiFaru, exo, stone glacier is what I would look at. Lots of options to choose from but be prepared to open your wallet.

Thanks for the info so far. What about the Kuiu Icon? Does anyone pack meat with it between the frame and daypack portion?

The Horn Hunter Full Curl system is another option. A little heavier than the Kifaru, SG, or EXO but carries a heavy load well for the price.

I use a eberlestock transformer that zips onto a eberlestock f1 mainframe. What is cool about it is you can take the shoulder straps off the mainframe and put it onto the transformer pack and use it as a day pack. The mainframe as a meat pack. Tons of options with that set up, I also have a direct zip in dry bag that is attached to the mainframe. Just a great setup that is super comfortable for a backpacker like myself.

Have used my Kuiu Ultra 3000 for a daypack and for packing out a couple moose and deer. Love it. The Icon is a slightly heavier version with extra pockets. I like the minimalist Ultra for primary use as a daypack. Weighs just a couple pounds but being taller than a typical daypack the waist belt is much more functional. Throw your meat in a Kuiu XL meatsack and sling it in between the carbon-fiber packboard and the pack bag and you pack your game without getting your gear all messy. We packed out 80# loads with it but I know it can handle more.

I forgot to post back but I ended up finding a mystery ranch hi-dice assault pack with a nice frame in multi cam for less than $300 and picked it up.
Hopefully it will be here before modern rifle for deer. I'll post a review after I use it a few days.
