Need some help! 2 military guys
« on: October 04, 2015, 02:58:59 PM »
Hey guys, let me start off by saying I'm not looking for anyone's honey hole. My self and one of the guys that works for me are looking for a place to hunt bear this next week. We finally have a week of leave and we want to get out after bears I was all over Capitol forest this weekend being that I live on the west side and saw nothing but a couple cow elk and ton of ATV riders. We were kind of looking to go to the east side as we have heard the wonders of how much different it is over there. We're both experienced hunters we just haven't had much time to go. If anyone could point is I. The right direction or the right area it would be greatly appreciated. We have about 4-6 days to devote to an area. It would just be nice if we could find an area that at least has some promise of seeing a bear. Thanks in advance!

Units 105, 121 both are VERY GOOD units for black bear here on the Eastside.

IEP land in 105. Camping is not permitted, but there is a local that will let you camp above the Columbia River off of kelly hill road. Either that or staycin motel in town of Northport, then its about a 2.5 mile drive from their to get to mitchell mountain.

Good luck. When u head to mitchell mountain to hunt off of Kelly hill, I saw 90% of the bear sign above the columbia river low on the IEP land. Look online for IEPs sight, type in Inland Paper and click on sight. There is a downloadable map of the IEP land, and your can download to phone and print. Good luck, I have seen a TON of bear up there over the years and shot a 326 lb sow up their on September 5th. Hope yo both do well, and dont forget your predator calls and cougar tags! GET A HOG!!!

If you're going to Northport you could stay at the upper Columbia rv park.  It's a nice place and well kept.

We're gonna go get lost around north port tomorrow through Friday morning, if it takes that long. Hopefully it's a great time. The weather looks to be cooling off so it looks good for us. I'll keep you guys posted, hopefully the trip is enjoyable since we're going about as far as we can possibly go to the other side of the state. Hopefully you guys don't get me hooked on the east side of the state, my wife might divorce me!

Tgomez, just so I don't get completely lost, sheep creek campground is on the north side of the river? That's where we're gonna plan on staying. I don't think there will be too many people especially since it's mid week and not a weekend. But I just wanna make sure I'm on the eighth side of the river because I'm sure cell service will be nothing.

Yes sir Sheep Creek is on the North side of the river. I believe its the secound left after you cross the bridge over the Columbia River. There is a gas station on the south side of the Columbia before you come to the bridge. Stop at gas station and the local cashier will tell you right where it is. When you guys hunt off of Mitchell Mountain you will see alot of clearcut area very low on the mountain right as your starting up the main road. There is a logging road that you can walk for miles. Anyways that area is a major bear crossing point and it has berries, hazlenuts, and fresh stumps littered through that entire area. I would hunt this area for bear, and right above the North Side of the Columbia River, litteraly a few hundred yards above the river. That's where the bears will be right now. If you hunt Sheep Creek than stay on the south east side that is naturally the open side of that area, the other side is really thick but has bear as well. They use to run the hounds on Sheep Creek years ago and knock em dead up their. Good luck to you two, and thanks for your service to us, and the greatest country on the planet! There's no doubt you two will love Northport, Wa! And don't forget to print a map off Inland Papers website. It is litteraly the "Mitchell Mountain" map.

Yes you have to buy a permit for $40 I believe is the fee.You can buy in Northport at MORNING BEAR COFFEE If you stop in Spokane than you can buy from WHITES BOOTS. The phone number is online. You may be able to buy other places as well, but yes you are correct you need the permit. You can also take a few cords of wood if you wanted. There is IEP land all over, awesome deer hunting on foothills of Mt. Spokane to the farm lands of the Columia Plateau. It's well worth the $. Bring your shotguns to, there are grouse everywhere.

I don't mind the fee one bit it seems to keep out some of the problem people at least on the west side of the state where meth seems to run rampant.

There's a TON of meth attics in Spokane, it's a HUGE problem. It's like the Walking Dead, lol :chuckle: Hope you do well, I have made some great memories in Northport and seen alot of beautiful animals. It's a cool place to be and very close to the Canadian border. Good of a bear spot as any if you ask me for spot and stalk.

Ok so here I am getting dressed and I can't decide which sidearm goes with my hat! Lol but on a serious note we always hear about wolves and Grizzlies up in the northeast corner, are either of them actually a problem or are they more like ghosts that you'll never see? In other words, do I need the .460 or is my typical .40 cal ok?

Your 40 is fine, all I have for sidearm is a 9mm. Only seen one grizz and it was up on the border heading into Canada. I usually just pack my aught 6.

I'm sure between the two of us there will be a small Arsenal in the truck. I always have a "camp rifle" which is usually my mini 14. And if we're gonna spend the better part of the week out there, we might need a few others for grouse and yotes and hopefully we'll call in a cougar or find one on a gut pile. Wish I had t chosen modern for deer or I'd take the muzzle loader for them. I really just wanna say thanks to TGOMEZ. even if we don't put anything down, I'm sure I'll be able to a show a friend and coworker of mine a good time. This will be different hunting than we're both used to, I've hunted Pennsylvania for 20 years and he's hunted Michigan for ten. But really just a big thanks!!

Ltzchris18. Thanks for your service.
I am quite familiar with the Mitchell mountain area as my parents lived in northport.
Lots of good hunting up that way.
Iep land goes to Canada...just a warning..there are no notices or sign I believe that say Canada.
I could be wrong..(I do have priors).
I have seen some big blonde bears..and huge whitetails up that way.
Good luck!

Your Welcome it was a pleasure to help you two out. And the Canadian/US border is clearly marked with these little "stainless steel" looking posts, on one side says US other side of post says Canada. It is also a swath clear cut border that you cant miss that seperates US/Canada.  Ill try to dig up a picture of those posts when I get out of my classes here at SCC.

Well we're headed back. Saw one bear on private land only. Talked to a few locals who said the fires ran off a lot of the Bears. Saw one that was shot and left a few days ago. Saw an elk carcass that had the straps cut out of it and the head taken and left. Called wdfw on both of those issues. Other than that beautiful country limits on grouse all three days. Saw a bunch of coyotes and turkey on private land. I'll be back again just not sure when. Thanks all the help guys.
