Wolf or Coyote?
« on: October 05, 2015, 07:02:18 AM »
Was down in Asotin County over the weekend just south of Snake River Road and Joseph Creek road hunting for upland birds.  We got out of the car about 9:00 and heard a bull bugle, then another one across the canyon and then we heard a bunch of howling.  Followed by lots of yips, then some more howling.

Elk at this point shut up.  We never saw them but they were close maybe 1/4 mile?  Anyone have any experiences in this area with wolves?

Talked to the fish and game warden who came out to check our licenses later on that morning and told him of our encounter and he said it was quite possible but would not elaborate when we asked about wolves in the area.

Not sure why the warden wouldn't elaborate on the wolf topic. It's no secret that they are there and WDFW is open to saying so. With that said, what you're describing sounds like coyotes to me.

Never heard a coyote howl like that before in all my years out hunting.  Sure wish I could have gotten a visual to make sure.  Maybe I should start bringing my binoculars with my chest strap that I use when bow hunting?  Thanks for the feedback!

Wolves have been in that area for over 20 years.
