Look in the small and steep timber stringers where there are springs. Also find a good spot and be patient. Hunters might push elk towards you. Half the people in that unit won't go 100 yards from their quads.

The game department has a good sales program. They give out more cow tags than there are elk in that unit right now. :chuckle:

cow tag's this time of yr are for local elk, they are spread out, just have to find them.
North facing slope's ,steep, where there is a water source. they will get up and graze during the day! find a shaded spot on the south side and use your bino's or spotting scope!  hunt the cooltimber.

Yep that's why we moved out of there. Was ok five years ago. But now too many cow tags. Its a joke.  :sry:

I saw one elk, partner practically petted it as it sniffed his backpack. It was opening day and a tiny tiny calf, couldn't bring my self to shoot it.

My son got a nice spike opening morning. 8)  Nothing to it!  We get out of the truck, walk 3 miles in a nearly straight :bdid: line kneel down and shoot elk! :dunno:  What happened after that sucked real bad!  :o  I am getting a to old for that stuff! :P

In the days after that the rest of us got close to some big bulls and near some small herds but not close enough to get a shot on another spike or cow :(

I will agree that there are more cow tags then cow elk in that unit (342) this time of year.

I wish they would let us have an opportunity to hunt the Little Naches during the muzzle loader season.  If only just once... ;)

2-5 out of the cow tags I know of. 1 of them was shot right out of one camp. 4/5 people saw elk. One misfire.

I was up there last week scouting for rifle season. Talked to a few muzzy hunters. I was told 2 cows and a spike got killed opening morning. A few other cows were killed during the week. Fair amount of elk around compared to the past 3 years. Lots of branched antler bulls. I saw a nice herd of elk at dark heading down the hill. My father just turned 70 and has a modern big bull permit. I have a modern cow permit. Any pointers to help my old man get his elk would be appreciated. I will return the favor..

Thank you GH

We scouted for my bull tag Saturday, did not see much. Still excited to hunt. Met some nice folks. Was quite a sight watching that storm come down the mountains.

I seen 1 dead spike coming off the mountain and a dead 5pt in a camp last weekend when i checked my trail cam. Had 1 spike and cow on it during ML season. Think the spike was in the back of the truck I saw coming off the mountain.

n_mathews13, it was appreciated and hopefully we can return the favor in the future.  My son and other hunting partner said that they talked to you a few days later.

Did you get on any nice bucks down that way?   Or a spike?

I did, they were real nice
I chased  elk around for a few days. The wind changing and just bad luck messed up a few opportunities , but had fun. Passed on a nice buck one day while dropn in on a spike. Ended up shootn a 3x2 on last day.. More elk then passed years for sure.

I missed a cow in opening morning. Saw tons of elk up there. Saw one cow that was not recovered which upset me greatly. I ended up coming home early because the family was sick.
