Help... Primer caps???
« on: October 13, 2015, 08:42:19 AM »
been out of muzzy hunting for quite a few years (went to bow), but getting back into it to take my grandson hunting... my problem is finding good primers...  seems almost 75% of the time I get duds, or takes a second strike to fire... when I pull the caps that dud on me, the nipple is plugged full of primer material from the cap...  using cci and dynamit nobel caps... tried changing nipples but same problem..  never had a dud in 1000's of caps back in the 70-80's... has the quality gotten that bad, then whats a better quality of cap to use??  or is something else wrong that I'm not seeing???

Hammer spring may not be tight anymore (or) hammer is off-center to the nipple.

It may not be that the caps are bad, but that the hammer may not be striking them hard enough. Or, it could be the nipple is worn out. I was having that issue with my Lyman Deerstalker for a long time, then decided to replace the nipple. Not a misfire since. What type of muzzleloader are you shooting?

I use an Uncle Mikes Hot Shot nipple without any issues. They are longer than a factory nipple so the hammer is still under the tension of the spring and not on the pre-set rebound of the hammer. CCI did make 2 lengths of caps, the longer one did not seat well on the Hot Shot.  :twocents:

Can I ask what rifle you are shooting - that could make a lot of difference in recommendations to fix your problem.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I have seen the nipple too mushroomed out cause this issue. I have also seen a hair line crack in a stock cause this same issue. make sure you have the correct caps.  Good luck fixing it. Squidward
I use CCI #11 sparking 3F Black Powder in a TC Hawkens.

its my grandsons, a Buckhorn, 50 cal... replaced the nipple twice... found some Remington caps work but loose on the nipple and fall off... my other muzzy (mine) is an Allen Thurber, 45 cal... same problem with the dynimite nobel caps, but the cci seem to work with it... tho a few time I had to fire it twice to get it to fire...

if the cap isn't seating when you push it on. the 1st hit may be seating the cap so the 2nd will set it off. you can try to buff, sand make the end of your nipple smaller a little to see if the cap will seat when you put it on. I don't have trouble with the CCI on my TC # 11 nipple, good luck. Squidward
