Idaho Backcounrty Deer Hunt
« on: October 07, 2015, 12:35:02 PM »
I am loaded up and headed to Idaho for a week of Mule Deer hunting. I will be backpacking in about  7 miles, scouting for 1 1/2 days then hunting the next five. I have a wolf tag, and two deer tags. I have never hunted this unit so I will be going in blind. I have no idea what's in store. But this could be interesting. It is breath taking country if nothing else

I will post a story how ever it turns out... I will be hunting in the the salmon river area. I would be just as excited about getting a wolf as a big buck!

Yes I will be hunting by myself. It's hard to convince a buddy to go to this length for a hunt when you never been there or hunted it. If it goes well I'm sure I will have volunteers next year  :chuckle: But I feel there will be other hunters all around

I lived in Idaho for 10 years. But I've never hunted this area. I have seen some of the bucks it use to carry. As far as packing them out, it will be a good to great buck or I will only be packing out my tags. It's to much work to pack a small buck out.

That area is beautiful! My friend has a cabin on the little salmon just out of Riggins. I love it over there.

To make a long story short. I found the type of buck I was looking for the nite before season. I was set up in shooting position the next morning at daylight. The buck did not show up so I moved to the other side of the slide for a better vantage point. It was steep enough I literally came out on my butt. I rolled a few rocks. Which I'm betting if the buck was in there he left after this. That night I located this buck again about a mile down the ridge. I made a stalk got a dead rest on a rock and missed. I was able to locate this buck one more time and missed a chip shot. I'm guessing it was buck fever, but my rifle could be off, but I doubt it is. This was a 170-175 type four point with a four inch cheater. I seen 20-25 mountain goats, 4 branch bulls and maybe 15 bucks. This is brutal country, I feel I did everything right except aim :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Spent a week before Labor day sightseeing around the Pinyon Peak, Yankee Fork, Twin Peaks, Sunbeam, Challis areas.  Lots of steep rugged beautiful country.  Didn't see many animals but had lots of fun.

To bring home an animal is a bonus but just to be out there makes it a success. Thanks for sharing the pics and story
