10x42 viper hd or zen ray prime hd binoculars?
« on: October 08, 2015, 03:17:27 PM »
I want to upgrade from my vortex Diamondbacks and have been trying to research what's better.  Both are about the same price and pretty much my limit to spend. I really like vortex as I also have the ranger 1000 and a razor spotter but if the zenrays are better I would consider them. Anyone compared them side by side?

I haven't looked through zen ray prime hd, but my zen ray ed2's were noticeably better than the viper HD that I compared them to.  Both are a significant step up from diamondbacks.  I am a vortex fan, with the ranger and a couple of scopes, but I like the  zen ray binocs better

I tried out Zen Ray ED3's for a few days in the field. They were heavier than I liked but the optical quality was better than that what I remember from mid range Vortex, which don't impress me too much. I wound up getting a Nikon EDG and sending the Zen Ray's back but they were certainly great glass for the money  :twocents:

So the here are advertised weights, all 10x42

Diamondback - 24.4
Viper HD. - 24.6
Razor HD - 24.8
Zen prime HD - 29
Zen ed3 - 26.8

So the primes are about 4.6 oz heavier than what I have now (diamondback 10x42). Is it that noticeable?  Are they as good as the razor?  I know they have a better FOV then the viper HD.

I guess when it comes down to it, I'm willing to spend a maximum or $500-$600 for binoculars. These seem to be the best fit for my price unless some one has any other suggestions.
