Duck calls

We haven’t had a duck call discussion in awhile and I “need” a new one – something easy to blow without requiring a lot of skill - reed(s) don't stick - doesn't sound like a kazoo -

Any recommendations?

Decent cheaper call is the buck gardener double nasty. Echo makes really good calls to.

1. Do you want to spend more than $100.00?

They are kind of like shotguns.  You need to pick one that works for you.  I have $200 calls that sound similar to $20 calls I have purchased.  Many calls are marketed towards the hunter.  Design, colors, names, etc and you have some of these younger guys hooked.
If you want one that will work for you and get it done for around $20 you have a bunch of options for commercial calls.
DR-85, Primos Wench call, DC - The Mule, Zink - Power Hen, various rich-n-tone calls.  RNT and others make models that are not acrylic that are priced to sell.  You may be able to hit the bargain cave at Cabelas and test out some last year models that are marked down as well.
Depends what your budget is.  Everyone seems to make calls this year and guys that are using them try to swing you two them.
JJ Lares, Taylor Calls, RNT, Bill Saunders, Sean Mann, Tim Grounds, Zink, Echo, Foiles are all proven calls.  The acrylic versions single, double or triple reed will start at about the $100 mark up to $160 or for goose up to $260.

A second thought!  Some of our sponsors on HW that make various calls have built some awesome looking custom duck calls.  I would be more inclined to help those guys out than buy a commercialized called.  Custom cut pieces of wood and a call that is truly unique from the next.  Then you can get a pack of reeds and tune it to what sounds good to you or have a few of us help you out on getting it tuned.   The tone board, chamber and reed selection make the call.  The rest is all marketing.

I've used a lot of calls in the $20-$50 range over the past four years that I've learned to duck hunt. Last year I bought a wooden Faulk's call for $20. It probably won't win any contests, but it does simple quacks, hails, chuckles, and come-backs really well for me. It does not fowl up like the other ones do, either.

That said ... some of the really expensive custom ones made out of exotic woods and other materials look like they're worth having simply because they look like pieces of art. For hunting, though, I'm not sure a really expensive one is going to make any difference for me, at least not at my current experience level. I could spend exponentially more for incremental improvements or work on things that will make massive improvements!

Spent last week in a Duck blind with the owner and CEO of Boom Bay Duck Calls.  I started using them last year and they are now the official call of our Outfitting business.  I am very impressed with them and the way they are all hand made..

I bought a Zink power hen 2 – sounds awful.  More like a predator call than a duck, like a dying rabbit.  It’s going back.

I can’t try any calls before I buy them and that makes the process difficult.

Try a Primos Wench call.  It will make you sound like you kind of know what your doing.  I usually get them for all the buddies starting out!

Youtube is your friend. Just look up duck calling and sort out what you want to hear. I'd avoid watching any stage or competition calling.

If you got the timber double reed that is a very good call. If you're on the X a lot of time you don't need to call.

Give a Haydels DR85 a try, been using one for almost 20 yrs.  I believe the Timber Cutter is the same call in a different shaped barrel if they still make it.

I havent quite got the single reed down, mostly due to lack of practice. I think id just stick to doubles if your just hunting.

I would say that the Primos Wench has probably killed more ducks than any call on the market. They are cheap, ugly, and are not going to win any calling competitions but they kill ducks. They take lots of air to blow and would never stand up in competition calling. That said I still have one that I keep in my blind bag as a back up. which says a lot because I have no shortage of acrylics calls to choose from. For a "Meat Call" they are fantastic. I have used them with great success and even talked a few passer by birds in when my expensive calls would not.

IMO calls are overrated. I have killed ducks with a $1 call and an $80 call and I have also killed lots of birds without using calls at all. 

I would invest in nice decoys over buying an expensive call. Go with whats cheap and sounds good to you.

Getting birds to decoy has 3 main parts. Location presentation and concealment.  More weighted on location. Even a good call isnt anygood if you dont know how/when to use it. But being on the X of where they want to go will.
