Lotta luck, just not good luck.
« on: October 10, 2015, 07:05:51 PM »
Finally dusted off the old smoke pole and went chasing some of the local deer.  Plenty of does and fawns and finally snuck up on a fairly nice 4x4 whitetail at about 50 yards.  Two misfires later he finally took off.  Pulled the nipple , dumped a little powder in and cleared the barrel and went on my way.  Spotted a very big, high racked muleie and made a great stalk on him - popped up ready to shoot and realized he was the biggest two point I've ever seen, did my best to put eye guards on him but just couldn't grow em.  Oh well, saw a lot of deer and a ton of turkeys, maybe I'll find another dumb one tomorrow.  Heading down to Moab, Utah next week for their rifle hunt so one way or the other should have a little venison in the freezer.

Your misfire was my misfire last year. I got fed up and only hunt with 209 primers and closed breech / break-action inlines these days...... T/C Omega and Knight Vision.

Washington state law won't let us do that or he'd probably switch.

I shoot an old Thompson Hawkins, been good to me over the years.  I figure misfires are just part of the challenge of hunting with muzzles. Really have had very few over the years so I really can't complain.  I just figure that whitey will be a little bigger next year and maybe not so lucky.  Sure saw a lot of little guys today, hope they don't slaughter to  many of them on the rifle hunt with the antler restriction off
