Antler choices
« on: October 11, 2015, 12:56:35 PM »
Its really funny how Ill take a dark antler over a light antler everytime.   Ill take mass over length, and Ill take gnarl or moss over just about anything.

Love gnarley bases and mass. Especially on blacktails.

I love those mahogany red versions on Blacktails.  Gorgeous.

Very nice photo.

Awsome deer, I like the dark horn too, so what do you think is the "biggest reason" for the difference in horn color?

I was thinking that maybe the light antlered critters drank light beer, and the heavy massed dark antlered critters drank good quality craft brews!

Long time ago, in Montana, I saw two mature mule deer bucks still in velvet.   These deer were up about 9500 feet.  One, a typical, had light brown velvet, the other a non-typical had darker velvet.  I am not 100% sure, but I saw two bucks in December that looked an a lot like my two from late summer and one had light colored antlers and the other darker.  They were down the main drainage from the high country with the does.  I have seen deer from the Okanagon fire country with real dark, almost black antlers and they are my favorites.

I believe some elk antlers are dark at least in part due to digging up dirt with their rack and I wonder if bucks ever do this as well? :dunno:
