Looking to find some grouse.
« on: October 11, 2015, 02:56:21 PM »
I just got my hunter safety certificate, and seriously need some advice on where to go to find grouse. Im living in the Bellevue area, and if anyone could give me an idea of where to go within 1 hour or so from here that would be great! Nobody in my family is a hunter so Im really having trouble getting started. :dunno:  :( Thanks!

Do you have a gun? any gear? check this out http://apps.wdfw.wa.gov/gohunt/ it will give you an idea. you pretty much want a forest near/in their habitat.

Saw a lot today 1000-1500ft elevation. Walk forest service roads and look along the edges 50 yards out,

I have a 12 gauge pump with imp/ cyl and modified chokes. Also a blaze orange vest. That link helped, thanks!

Would there be grouse at higher altitudes as well? Like 3000 feet or so?

Yes, up higher even.  Seen them at over 6,000 and imagine in some places probably higher than that.  As long as there is some cover and water.  But the higher up, the more you might get blue grouse than ruffed.

yes. And you can find them higher. I see them up to 6000 feet. I find grouse most often  in gravely areas and rockslides, with Aspen trees, next to a creek or spring.
