fawn distress work on bucks?
« on: October 11, 2015, 04:54:02 PM »
I was bear hunting this evening and set up at the edge of some timber. I started calling using a fawn distress call, and almost immediately started hearing noise coming my way. I readied my gun and gave a few more bleats from the call, and then two blacktail doe came trotting out of the woods right towards me from different directions. I stood totally still and they both approached within 10 yards of me and looked at me like they didn't quite know what to think. Finally I moved my arm to try and shoo them away and they took off. It was a cool experience and I might try this technique for my doe tag later in the season. I was wondering if this kind of call ever worked on bucks though?

It will work on the young bucks sometimes. I think they respond out of curiousity more than anything. I use them on clearcuts sometimes just to see if I can get a doe moving that might take a buck with her.

Works for does, but every buck I've ever seen while using that call have booked it in the opposite direction. I think it has the opposite effect on most bucks.

I have only had it work on spikes and two point blacktails.

Have called in a doe before, but never a buck. Then again, I have very little experience

I had a nice 4x4 mule deer come out of his bed in sagebrush and trot about 200 yards to my foxpro caller several years ago while I was coyote hunting.  I was using fawn in distress. He stuck his nose real close to the caller and must not of liked what he smelled, off he went.  I've seen a lot of different reactions from different deer.

Scott Haugen states that bucks will also occasionally come in, which agrees with previous comments.  He recommends the calling technique to locate groups of does in the early season so that you know a general location and then can find them later in the season when they may have bucks in tow.

If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

That's what i was hoping for but it seems like the bears around here are all down at the river and I'm not looking for a salmon fed bear.  :P
