The interesting questions to be asked is what will Unsworth look for in a new Chief? Proven LE leader? Proven natural resource LE leader? From inside WA? Outside WA?

You cant really even get a general consensus from current or retired WDFW Officers what the 'profile' of a Chief should be. One of the letters on Todd's site is from retired WDFW Officer Mike Krenz who was never really a supporter of general (full) law enforcement authority for WDFW Officers. Yet he suggested that State Representative Chris Hurst would be a good choice for the WDFW LE Chief. Hurst is an outdoorsman but his background is being a police officer for Black Diamond. Not exactly a large agency or one that does natural resource law enforcement.

Some will say all you need is a proven people leader. Others will say you want a proven people leader who has been a game warden. You can ask 15 different WDFW Officers and get 15 different responses.
No disrespect - but I don't care what current or retired WDFW officers think a profile should be or what they want in a Chief.  These guys work largely for the Sportsmen - who pay their bills - and I think many have forgotten that.  The question that really matters - what do Sportsmen want in a new LE Chief.  I hope Unsworth reaches outside WDFW to bring in a new chief...and at minimum considers the voluminous feedback from sportsmen in the state on this matter and/or conducts additional outreach in identifying general qualities or even specific individuals for the position.

Considering that nearly every WDFW Officer hunts and/or fishes I would think they know what sportsmen want. A lot of officers have complained about having to work the non-resource activities, well most outdoorsmen also agree with them. Most officers decide to work for WDFW because they are sportsmen. If they simply wanted to be in LE there are lots of agencies in WA who pay a lot more.  :twocents:

If the overwhelming majority of great LE folks working in the field had more input, maybe management wouldn't been in the hot water they're in now.

:yeah:

The Region 3 Captain (which for LE oversees Kittitas, Yakima, Benton, Franklin & Walla Walla Counties) position is currently being advertised. It'll be interesting to see who makes that hiring decision. It'll be months before a new Chief is hired and I doubt that WDFW would wait that long to fill the Captains position. So will Hobbs and Cenci make the choice?? We'll have to wait and see.

I think the current fish and game officers should have input on a replacement but, don't half the guys support cenci? I hope I'm wrong with that assumption!  In the end, just like in most businesses the top guy always does what he wants anyway, even if he's trying to be lead a certain way.  I would just pray he sees the mess that cenci and his followers has caused and doesn't give them any consideration??  I'd vote for you Bigtex!

I agree with others on here in that this is where we will see what kind of man Unsworth is.  He has experience in this, it's his baby, and like a college coach, these will be his recruits vs the old coach they got rid of.

Interesting indeed....

I've written to Director Unsworth regarding this. He has an opportunity to make a positive impact on the WDFW in several areas. Canning those top three stooges is one which could help change the entire department.

They and their boot licking disciples need to be sent packing........it amounts to a lot of guys who went along with a rotten program, knowing full well it was wrong, but none the less kept their mouths shut and proceeded  on with the total bs program AND STILL DO !!!!!  Muckem all out.

Have been away for a while....no, not behind bars or anything like that.....and am just catching up with this.  INCREDIBLE!!  Whatever happened to the good old Game Warden?  Some of these new WDFW Police Officers have more cop stuff hanging on them than I can believe.  Now I know it's a dangerous job out there being in fish and game enforcement but there is something about that image that bothers me.  This looks like the time for Unsworth to make a move to do some house cleaning and get back to basics.

In the legislators email it mentioned how they really have no ability to fire Cenci, Crown, etc and it is all up to Unsworth and they have no authority over him. That's true.

But maybe it's time to penalize WDFW until action is taken. Pearson is in charge of the Natural Resource Committee, he determines which bills get a hearing, get a committee vote and move on. Maybe it's time for him to essentially kill all WDFW related bills that come to his committee. Will it hurt WDFW, sportsman, and maybe even the resource? Sure, but that seems to be the only way to get something done.

Maybe Pearson just has to hold WDFW hostage by delaying their legislation and basically telling Unsworth that nothing will change legislatively until things change in the Enforcement Program.  :twocents:

I certainly would seem to be the only possible way to force the change, which absolutely must occur; for the good of the WDFW employees, the license buyers, and the natural resources.

It appears the commission or governor must want this issue to fade away. Remember, the Commission is appointed by the governor, Unsworth is appointed by the Commission, Unsworth has been told what the Commission and the Governor expect, he is doing his job. Tightening the purse strings may be the only way to possibly get action. Perhaps everyone who is writing letters should also start copying every letter and message that's been sent and will be sent in the future to Pearson who is the chair of Natural Resources in the Senate and Brian Blake who is the chair of the Natural Resources Committee in the House.

Bearpaw is 100% correct.  Pearson and Blake are our friends.  They are great supporters of the hunting community.  There is tremendous power in the purse.  Your messages have added power since this is an election year.

Region 2 Captain Chris Anderson is one of four final candidates for the Moses Lake PD Chief's job.

Anderson is a friend and supporter of Cenci, one of very few on the eastside. Losing Anderson would be a blow to Cenci, especially on the eastside.
