what will your opening day set up look like?
« on: October 13, 2015, 08:41:00 AM »
My friends and I make opening day a bit of an event. We usually have about 7 or 8 of us that go out. Typically we set up two different blinds but have done 7 in one blind before which is pretty chaotic.

Our goal for the opener is to take as many decoys as we can haul for no good reason, weve had just as good of success with 24 deeks as weve had with 300 deeks but having that many deeks out is just awesome for some reason.

This year will be no different, we will have as many deeks as our boats can carry, probably 300 or so spread out between 2 blinds a couple hundred yards apart. Cant wait for this weekend!

Depends on if we can find geese landing where we can hunt them, if not, we will hit the water.
Nothing guaranteed, but the potential is always there.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Good Lord, how big are your blinds?

They are big and they are poorly made, one of the nice things about opening day is concealment isnt a huge concern.  Definitely costs us a bird or two but for the most part not a huge deal where we are. Were after ducks and hunt off banks with decent natural cover. If we were after geese it would be a different story.

Last year’s opener I used 6 full body decoys and one wind duck.  That worked well.

I will probably put out a dozen floaters this year.

I'm thinking something like this!  Then your buddy has you shift them around or add a few more in the spots he sees open!

we will have a standard set up This Saturday for the South Dakota pheasant opener....but snow free. This year should be 23 guns and 10+ dogs; no deeks required  :IBCOOL:

Probably doing a classic j hook. Winds predominantly from the south and on our spot if we set up on the wind we would be pointing at the road. Using about 3 1/2 duck decoys and 6 geese.
