Hunted with a new partner today
« on: October 17, 2015, 09:55:33 PM »
First hunt with a new duck hunting partner and it was a great time, we met last spring.  We hit a public spot on the westside.  There was only one other group in the marsh and after an hour of not a single bird flying they bailed.  We got out at nine this morning, it was dead until 1.30, the ducks started working we ended up with seven birds for the two of us.  We didn't have a dog as both of ours are old so we had to pick our shots , we ended up firing 12 shells , we each got three and we both had to work over one bird together taking two shells from my gun and one from his.

This was an old f--ts hunt between us we have 115 years of duck hunting under our belts, my duck boat is pushing 40 years old and my shotgun today was a sxs with hammers but for a hammer gun it is pretty young at only 75 years old.  After 50+ years of chasing ducks it is still fun.

I hope you all had as nice a day as we did.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I am the youngest guy of the three of us who waterfowl together and I'd like to be 60 again.  On occasion, one of the guys grandsons will join us but we normall hunt on Wed.  I'm the only one of the three who has not had a knee replaced. We started hunting together about 20 years ago.  Till then I was, for the most part, a solo act.
Hunted for years with a Mooseberg 500 I bought with paper route $$, mail order from Herters about 1966.  Had to switch to a gas auto loader several years back because my old arthritic shoulder just could not take the beating anymore.
We all pray for overcast wx, a little wind and the ability to answer the alarm clock when it goes off in the morning.

Glad you have found someone to share the hunt with.
You guys have the greatest season ever!
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Nice to hear about fellow oldsters getting out in the field.

Isn't it nice to remember how buying guns was in the old days.   I was 19 or 20 and had Herters send me a revolver thru the US mail.  Mailman dropped it off at our mailbox.
