Out of Bullets - Need Help
« on: October 19, 2015, 07:40:42 AM »
I've been shooting Nosler Accubond 180 gr in my 30-06.  I was using Ferderal Premium brand.  I can't find them anywhere.  I heard they are discontinued.  I went to the Nosler sight and they don't have them.  What's up? :dunno:

Looks like I need to find a different type.  I'm looking for suggestions on a good elk bullet.  What do you all shoot?

You might look at nosler trophy grade... Might be able to find some 180gr accubonds for your 06

I reload myself, but if I had to rely on availability I'd go simple cheap Remington cor lokts.  In 180 grain.   They will hold together at 3006 velocities.

Check the Nosler Pro Shop online has well, sometimes they have killer deals on factory blems and over runs depending on the day! Worth looking at the site for some of these deals.

In the 30/06 with 180 grain bullets I wouldn't be afraid to use Winchester Power Points. I've used them in my 270 for mule deer and they do just fine. Wal mart usually has them for about $20/box.

He's actually looking for cartridges, not bullets.

His title specified bullets, hoping he knows the difference  :dunno: but working in the firearms business I've had plenty of people get mad at me for asking for bullets, I give them bullets and are upset when it's not ammo.  :chuckle:

It's probably safe to assume that he knows specifically what he's looking for. When he mentioned Federal Premiums, I assumed at that point he was looking for loaded ammo.

Good grief, go find internet nits to pick elsewhere.  If you're taking the time to post, why not just be helpful?

I mostly shoot a muzzleloader these days, and have been extremely impressed with the performance of Barnes bullets.  I'll be chasing my second elk with my .30-06 this year, so I bought a box of ammo loaded with 180gr. Barnes TSX.  Barnes are copper bullets--other manufacturers have jumped on that bandwagon, too--Nosler makes the E-Tip, and I saw that Remington now makes a version.

I've also had excellent performance on elk with Nosler Partitions in the past--they're the old-guard standard in bonded/partitioned bullets.  Good expansion, excellent weight retention and penetration.  Swift A-Frame is a similarly designed bullet that's worth consideration.

Yes, plain ol' Federal blue box or Winchester Power Points will kill elk, but why not use a bullet that's designed for BIG game?

I ran into the same situation.  Federal discontinued the accubonds 30-06 and Nosler is out of stock.    I posted the same thing in the ammo section here a few weeks back, member pointed me to double tap ammo (http://www.doubletapammo.net/index.php?route=product/product&path=130_262&product_id=247).  Not cheap, but its what you want.   Listed as 2800fps vs the federal 2700fps.  I shot a box this weekend, group same as federal loads @130 yrds.  for what its worth, accubonds seem to group tighter at 300yrds than partitions out of my gun.
