Idaho small elk success.
« on: October 19, 2015, 01:39:43 PM »
Love Idaho, we have had some great years over there, less people and quad friendly.  The hunting was tough this year, our usual spot has been taken over by bow hunters, the locals that camp by us have passed the word where we have had luck.  No more talking about where we get Bulls now!!  Our first couple days were very quiet with almost no fresh sign of elk.  I decided to hit an area that was new to me, it's in the timber.  After about a 4 mile walk I bumped into some elk, the wind was perfect so I quickly cow called and bulged with my phelps reed that I keep in my mouth.  I saw a calf walk away and then saw a spike turn around and start walking to me.  I rested my .300 win mag on a tree and waited for him to turn, after walking to me up to 40 yards, he turned broadside and boom!  He went down in his tracks and never got up again.  I love that second before you shoot, I always grin and think, your gonna kill another bull!!! I've been blessed with elk hunting, he is one of my smallest Bulls but couldn't be happier.  I said a prayer for him and got to work, you guys know how hard it is to process an elk alone, lots of work.  I shot him at noon, by two, he was quartered, bagged, deboned and hanging above a small creek waiting for us the next day.  I always carry my caribou game bags with me, and get as much done to help my buddies out.  With my flash 20 Sitka day pack, I loaded the head and hind quarter for the pack out.  Got to my quad at 5 pm, next day was nice having two buddies to help.  I will load pics a couple at a time, takes my phone a while.  Can't wait till next year!

Yeah, he has me hooked on those westerns.  Thanks for the comments all, that camp takes a few hours to put up and take down. Most years it rains on us the whole time, only nice thing about the weather this year was everything being dry.
