Slow custom build. How long did it take?
« on: October 19, 2015, 01:04:40 PM »
parts are slowly arriving for my new build. Started ordering parts in June and things are arriving. Still waiting on the stock that might me a few more months. Its a Manners T6A. Thens I need to find the best gunsmith around to work on this thing. Oh ya, its going to be a 7mm SAUM when its finished.

I like what I see so far, I ordered a Manners stock in February ............................ still waiting.  The waiting times for all the components are very trying, it would help a little if the estimated times they give you when ordering were accurate!  If you get tired of waiting let me know, I could use a 7SAUM.
Disappointments are inevitable, misery is optional.

Yes sir, that's going to be a sweet rig what trigger you plan on using. a friend at my local range has a Huber on his Defiance and I have to say it is the best trigger I have ever tried. I'm sure you have a few smiths in mind and hopefully they wont make you wait to long. unlike a good friend who ordered everything just like you and the smith who is in the Puyallup area made him wait a year for it to be put together.

The Huber is a nice trigger, but a Jewell is the way to go.  Most of the Huber triggers on a defiance have some unsafe features.   They like to either fire when the safety comes off or fire when lifting the bolt after the safety has been engaged.  Have seen this happen at several matches.

I was going to go with Timney or Jewell. But I have heard some bad reports that people have had more trouble with Jewell triggers in hunting situations were dirt or grit might be a issue for a couple days. Anyone have any real world experience with a Jewell trigger in dusty or dirty situations ? run into any issues

I hear Jewell if you want really light trigger pull and doing benchrest shooting. Timney trigger if your hunting and that kind of stage with a little heavier trigger pull. 2#-#3 pound trigger weight.

I have never had a problem with a jewell trigger in the field and I have all my triggers set to 2 lbs they are a very reliable trigger and a very crisp break.

Rbros would be a good option for a smith to complete your build I heard a lot of good things on his builds and doesn't take a year to complete. maybe he could chime in on his lead time.

I only run Timney. Too many field issues with Jewel in PRS.

Good Builds take time...got a new one at the smith being assembled...told himmto take his time...no rush.

hollowed out truck axle from Benchmark took ~ 4 months...I was ok with that!!

More timney triggers break down in the prs than jewels by a long shot.  Most all the top shooters are running jewel triggers.  Ours have never gone down in match or hunting conditions and are usually only cleaned each year during rebarrel time.

X2!    Especially since the OP is in Olympia.  Not very often are you only about an hour away from the "smith" that's building your new full custom rifle.  I don't know Travis personally but I've seen some of his work and he helped me out on a 6.5-06 Ack Imp project a few years ago.  I wouldn't think twice about having him do a build for me.

Unless your mind is just set on doing the 7 SAUM, you may want to talk to him about what he's been doing with the 7mm Rem Mag.

Regardless of what Travis chambers it in, it'll be good!
