My daughters first buck
« on: October 21, 2015, 12:31:14 PM »
After many shot opportunities on some bigger bucks, she was finally able to close the deal with this buck. I glassed this buck from about a mile away feeding. Watched him for about 45 minutes until he bedded down in a steep rock slide. We worked our way over to the ridge line and started making our way down through the buck brush and rocks. Found him still in his bed and she made a 50 yard shot. I thought for sure he'd blow out of there before we got close enough to see him but he was bedded faced at an angle away from us and the wind was blowing hard up the hill. I'm sure I was way more excited then she was...she said "dad, it's just a deer....I'm wish it was that big one we were hunting..." that's my girl, always wanting a bigger buck! Of all the hunts I've been on, this was probably the most fun, and nerve racking. Anyone that has ever taken an 11 girl on her first hunt knows how hard it can be...or any kid for that matter.

Wait a minute, did you say this is the smaller one, you settled on?!

Uhh, I'm a little older than 11 and not even remotely as cute, ok I'm actually not cute at all, but is there any chance you'd be interested in adopting me because if that's the little one, I want you to take me hunting too.  :chuckle:

WOW!  That's a dandy of a buck and awesome job by your daughter for slaying that monster.

I sure hope you explained to her they aren't always going to be this big because if you didn't, you Sir have some very large expectations to live up to in the years to come. :yike:

I was just looking at that picture again and couldn't help but notice she looks cool as a cucumber, like it was just another day on the playground.

Those are moments no amount of money can buy.  Well done!

I'm not saying she settled, especially since this is her first year hunting. She just has big expectations. She's sat with me over the years and watched giant bucks, some over 200 inches. So, she's no stranger to seeing big bucks. The bigger one that we were hunting was significantly bigger than the one she killed. We had multiple opportunities at him, but it just didn't work out. Here's a couple pics from 2013 of a buck we had on our property. We watched this buck every day from august through December.

jstamp, did you by chance measure the width on that buck your daughter got?  You don't have to say where but was this buck taken in Wa. state or is it an out of state harvest?  And again, congrats to your daughter for a job well done!

I told her if she killed a deer I'd take her elk hunting Last night she asked when we were heading to elk camp...lol. She said, I think I'm gonna hold out for a 300 inch bull! I about choked on my chew. That's my girl!!! I did tell her that a 300 inch bull would be a bit harder than a mule deer though. She said, well just call one in like you do for everyone else and I should be good to go...so it looks like I might have to pack an Elk camp in to the high country for a few days before I head to montana.
