Last minute Montana help
« on: October 21, 2015, 06:56:51 PM »
I hate to do this but have no other option at this point.  My dad and I had planned to be hunting a private ranch the week before thanksgiving for mulies. A few weeks ago we both found out that we have work obligations that won't let us go. We are now looking for a different area to hunt for a few days the week prior. I have two areas we hunted a few years ago and years prior but both have been hammered by wolves. All reports I have gotten are to not waste our time as the herds are just beginning to rebound. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

So you're deer hunting only?  What hunt district(s) where you thinking of going to?

Our plan right now was hunting outside st Regis and yes only deer.

If you're going to hunt muleys in NW MT you're limited in options.  Cabinets, Swan Range, and the like.  I'd go east of the Continental Divide if I were you.

Agreed. Just on our shorter time frame it will be harder to drive 10+ hours

I'm driving 14 hours for a 3 day run over thanksgiving if that makes you feel any better.  Two guys just switch out and never stop except for gas.

That's what we ended up doing on our Wyoming trip. Long trek but worth it

Yep!  Sucks while your doing it but like packouts and everything else that can suck on a hunt, it makes for fond memories and great stories later on down the road.  Sore shoulders are forgotten as soon as the tailgate gets dropped..........

Came through that area North of St. Regis this year.  There has to be some big Mule Deer in there somewhere......

Isn't an extra 4-5 hours of driving worth it if you see deer?  If you're driving just to go hike in the woods, what's the point?

All sorts of Block Management between Shelby and Havre, as well as a fair bit of public land.

We would be leaving from wenatchee so st Regis is only about 4.5 hours away which would be pretty awesome. I will see what I can find down around Hamilton too. Thanks for all the tips guys. Just would hate to eat $1100 or whatever it is in tags

I believe most of that Hamilton area and the Bitterroot valley is draw only for mulies, if I remember correctly.

A pretty good share of Region 2 and Region 3 are either limited permit or first choice unlimited permit.

Anybody hunted down towards twin bridges? We hunted there like 15 years ago and I can't recall remotely where we went but remember I liked it.

I hunted outside of twin the last few years, seen a few small bucks. Very few mulies from what i've seen but imo has the potential for big deer in the roots

Well day one was no good. Saw 6 does but now we are scrambling for a place to go because 95% of the area we planned on hunting is locked up behind gates. Not the way we hoped this trip would start.

Yes I know and if we had a day of two longer we would have made the trek for sure. My old man has to be back to Portland Sunday afternoon/evening so he didn't want to make the 12 hour drive from my house then the additional 4-5 to Portland... :o
