Winston Gmu 520
« on: October 24, 2015, 09:30:04 PM »
If someone could give me some advise would be great!
Me and my two young sons got drawn in the Winston for cow tags. I have been scouting every weekend from Kid Valley to Mossyrock. So far have not been that impressed with the area. Have seen some fresh sign but not a lot. I have never been west of the 505 yet. have two more weekends to go. Any thoughts?

Was thinking about staying at Winston creek campground but have not checked it out or kid valley. All advise would be appreciated

If you've been scouting from kid valley to mossyrock I'm guessing you have a weyco permit? I was going to suggest getting one if you hadn't already so you aren't limiting yourself on available land to hunt. Lots of weyco land down there.  Have fun in there with your boys.

Anybody know how many cow tags they gave out this year for modern?

If you can get there depending on your access, the reprod below Vanson Peak along the 2600 rd will always have cows in it. . This part of the area is a mix of Weyco and NF land. Be careful of where you are as this is the eastern boundary area of Winston.

Before going to bed, get on your knees and pray for snow!!

I heard a report last year that said we have lost 50% of the Winston herd each year for the past four due to hoof rot.  It's getting tough out there for sure.  Snow will up your chances ten fold.  But if it doesn't come just be persistent.  It's still a rather good hunt.  I always stay at Kid Valley and come in from there.  We saw a lot of sign yesterday, but did not see any elk.

Good Luck!

I stay at Camp 9 the last couple of years... The guys there Gary, Roy and Brothers and Son are all amazing people. Have been hunting the Winston for Years!! I love the area up there have taken a few Elk from there. Nothing last year. But I'm hoping this will be the year. I don't have a weyco permit this year but have seen a couple of nice bulls on state land and another over in mossyrock on state land. So we will see what happens!!! Taking my trailer up early this year to set up camp...

Try the cuts above and the timbered draws below "Crazy Man" Mtn. I always see elk in there. It was my go to spot for years.
