Recommendation for Rifle for 13 yr old kid
« on: October 25, 2015, 08:24:26 PM »
Thinking to buy a rifle for my 13 years old son. I am thinking at something in .270 win. Can anyone recommend a specific brand/model? My first thought is Tikka T3 lite.
Thoughts, ideas?

There are many great entry-level rifles out there but it's hard to beat the Tikka.  Great value at that price point...

There are a  lot of good rifles that will do what you want. Make sure the rifle stock fits your kid. Probably the best buy on an entry level rifle right now is the Marlin X7. The Freedom Group,(Remington) is stopping production on the rifle and it can be had in a lot of places at a great price. Davidsons, (Gallery of guns) had them last week For $250.delivered to a local FFL. They are chambered in 270 Winchester and come with a one piece Weaver style mount. They also have a reasonable recoil pad. The couple that I have shot have been very accurate. I don't know how much you are into working on rifles but they are a barrel nut rifle and can be easily be rebarreled at home. In this case, it could be made anything that shared the same base as a 270 simply by screwing on the new barrel and using headspace gauges.
I will hunt everywhere before I die

Tough to beat this 'ready to hunt' deal.  Please remember to send me a finder's fee!

Curious what your experience was.....

I got this for my daughter, and it's worked great.

We couldn't get any ammo to group.  Everything I read others were having the same problem.  I just didn't expect to have such an issue.  We ended up bedding the stock and worked he barrel.  Reduced the trigger pull and had a friend who is an expert reloader work up some loads.   I guess I have only shot with higher end rifles.  I anticipated much better results out of the box.  I'm glad you had better luck then me. It shoots much better now.  But it is pretty much custom.
