264 Win Mag
« on: October 26, 2015, 02:45:15 PM »
Hey guys, I've been contemplating on putting together a longer ranged set up together and I'd like to be able to use it for elk. I was curious of your opinions on using a 264 for elk, I don't plan on do any crazy long shots, in fact I don't want to shoot over 450 yards or so. I know that's not not long range for a lot of you but it's just my preference. Anyhow, if it's not sufficient for elk, I'll just continue use my 30-06 for elk and then decide whether or not to make my 243, 270 or 264 a longer range gun to hunt deer and coyotes and what not with. My grandpa had taken his first elk with the 264, but it was a spike at a closer range which is why I'm curious if you guys think it'd be enough to take down a bigger bull. I think it'd be special to take my first elk with the exact same gun that he did and hand load the rounds for it with my pops but if not, the 30-06 was his as well abd I'll be using that! Thanks in advance - Ryan.

I am shooting 130 berger hunting vlds at 3188 fps. I would not hesitate to use it on elk and plan to put one down with it next week.

In standard length and shorter barrels a 264 runs rite along with the 270, plenty capable of taking elk. To get the most out of it though you'd probably want to run around a 28" barrel to pick up an extra 200-300 FPS over a 24" barrel.

One of the guys in our Utah camp whacked a nice 6X6 at medium range with the 6.5-284.  Busted him up good.  I was left impressed!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

It's to the 264 as the 280 is to the 7mm rem mag. Gets you about 90 percent of the way there but I believe you can use much easier to find 270 win brass and neck it run it through the sizing die. If you had someone cut you a 6.5-06 improved chamber it would cut the difference between them about in half.

6.5 Creedmoor....
Have heard lots of great things about that caliber. I would definitely be considering it if I were going to buy a new rifle, but I already have these ones so I may as well make use of what I've got for now!
