My First Buck
« on: October 27, 2015, 10:59:33 AM »
I am still on cloud 9.  I shot my first buck Saturday afternoon on my second deer hunt.  My first love is hunting birds with my Brittanys.  I decided to hunt deer a couple years ago after an invitation from my Uncle.

I found this guy standing in a thick patch of brush with a bunch of old stumps and logs 125 yards from a hill I had climbed.  I saw his butt, and thought it was another odd looking stump at first.  I glassed over him and discovered him staring at me.  I could not see a third point in the thick brush.  It was difficult for me to distinguish between antlers and branches.  He finally tilted his head just a tiny amount and I could see the third point.  I raised my rifle, braced the barrel on my knee and focused on my target.  My heart was beating like crazy, I took a deep breath and fired.   He jumped and ran.  I was scared I had made a poor shot as I stood up.  I found him lying about 40 yards away.  The bullet wound was just above his shoulder which made me happy.  I gutted him with help from others in my camp.  I found that half his heart was destroyed.  I am really proud of my shot.  I’m not the greatest marksman and having a clean kill was very important to me.  I skinned him back at camp with help from the more experienced hunters in my group.  I have since removed all the meat with help from my great wife.  It's really been an amazing experience, and I didn't realize how rewarding this would all feel.

 8)  Misster McGregr my friend, you have been baptized into the brotherhood of buckslayers.  It sounds like you really have your act together as a thoughtful and methodical hunter.  We sure could use a few more like you.  Congratulations on your fine harvest.  That is one hell of a buck.  Welcome to the club!

I have to admit the body was much bigger than I expected when I got up to him.  I was really impressed with his size.  I've glassed some over the last few years, but there was just no comparison.

Appreciate it.  I've always prided myself in hunting ethically for birds, I guess I felt that responsibility even more so hunting for big game.

That jacket has covered a lot of miles over the years following dogs.  Now I can say its truly multipurpose.  I have certainly gotten my money's worth out of it!
