I just read about WDFW doing shoreline studies of forage fish.  ArticLe mentioned how tiny the eggs were and i thought this might be related?

That's weird. have you contacted them about it? I live out in seabeck but all that I hunt is private so I've never seen anything like it. Any pics?

I'll admit I'm "assuming" a bit, but I cant figure how given the info provided by the OP on the setup, that he managed to smell and see the liquid without first pulling up the plate to see what was under it.

So in my estimation the OP "said he messed with it" in his 2 posts.

"I saw 2 styrofoam plates with wood BBQ skewers holding the plate to the ground.  Said WDFW and a couple numbers and under it was a plastic cup buried in the ground so the top of the cup is level with the ground and filled half way with a clear yellowish fluid.  What is it?  Didn't smell nasty."

You may well be correct, that I am a strange fellow. I tend to leave things alone that aren't mine and appear to be purposefully placed where they are. That's why I leave trail cameras alone, don't touch climbing tree stands left at the base of tree's, leave research project materials alone, ect...... But based on experience and "Someone stole my stand/trail camera" threads, I'd say my behavior is abnormal on average. I can live with that.

In my teen years, every time we saw plastic cups in the woods, when followed led straight to a keg of foamy beer.

They are used to find your way out of the woods after the party, closing one eye helps to figure out which of the two (right or left) to follow.
