What is the best low priced hunting pack for back country? Teeing to stay under about $100-150. Anything that can hold all gear and my meat.

Cabelas Alaskan frame pack maybe? Or something used like a Dana Designs Terraframe or something along those lines. Horn Hunter is a good lower priced pack but not sure that you'd get that low priced. You could probably find an ILBE military pack for that money.

Go used. A dana designs as already mentioned is a good choice. Also any large backpacking pack that fits you well should be sufficient. Externals are an option but you may want to carry along a daypack too.

I would second the Cabela's Alaskan frame/pack or the terraframe. Not much else out there in the lower price range is gonna haul camp and meat weight very darn comfortably.

I'd highly recommend a hauler style Frame with a dry sack for your main bag....keep the frame shorter so it doesn't snag on stuff...the less fabric the better....you don't want your pack soaking up 5 gallons of water...or even worse freeze !

Cabelas extreme outfitters pack....new is 230 I think. I've used mine for 7 years pretty rough use. Summer trips and fall hunts. Its not the most aerodynamic but it does a nice job. 4 pack outs in the 75-80 lb range. External is nice keeps the load high and you can separate your gear and meat. I've updated almost every piece of gear but this. One more nice thing is it only weighs 8 lbs.

I know its more than you want to spend but this seems to be a damn good deal. I just ordered one, the reviews on Cabelas are very positive.

You might want to go used. I see decent packs in thrift stores, from time to time. Or check Sierra Trading Post online?

I like the idea of buying a frame pack and then attaching a dry bag to it, too.

Kelty red cloud 90, it's a couple hundred bucks and not a "hunting" pack but works well for me

like some of the others above i would look to a used high end mountain/backpacking pack. dana, gregory, arcyeryx are probably the most durable. rei, kelty, osprey would serve well enough til you upgrade

The Kelty Cache Hauler is like $130 or less from Sportsman's Warehouse. It's a large frame and not the best for going through brush but if you get that and a waterproof sack for the main bag - you're good to go. Tell ya what...PM sent

I have a lightly used Cabelas alaskan outfitter frame and bag I'd sell you for $100. The frame alone is well worth that as it makes an awesome pack frame for hauling just meat.

Wait for sale and spend and extra $100 and get a Kuiu Ultra 3000 for $225 and enjoy it. Hunt with it on all the time, weighs 2#, ready to pack all the meat you can carry when you need it.

Another option if you still don't have a pack watch camofire for the Easton fullbore 5600. Just bought one recently, collapses down for a great day pack, haven't tested it under load yet but felt great with 3 liters of water, knives, lights, spotter with tripod, game bags, emergency kit and lunch in day pack mode. Price was $99 on camofire

Go to the army surplus store and buy a large Alice pack, they are indestructible and have been serving our light infantry for over 40 years, they tried to replace it twice but we always went back to the large Alice pack.. more room and storage than you can ever hope to use and then some, you couldn't pack the amount of weight it is rated for

I was wondering if anyone also knew what kind of gear would be wise to pack for a 4-day back country elk hunt. Also if there isn't anyone who would possibly have experience in this to lend a few pointers of how to scout back country? I am currently trying to find places to hunt so I would like to know how to scout them out. Not asking for a place to hunt just tips on how to scout out a place once I find a hunting spot. Any help is appreciated immensely.

Check out the Eberlestock gunrunner2 for a lighter day pack. My buddy has this and it is a great pack. Very comfortable, lightweight. I have the x1a1. It's a couple lbs heavier but offers more room for extended trips. Very versatile with bladders and optional add on pouches.

Not sure if you're familiar with Rokslide.com, but they have a few current threads on backcountry gear lists. Might check them out.

Are you looking for full gear lists? Im pretty sure silkonthewestside and/or fillthefreezer have posted some in the past, just do a search on this board.

I would sell that pack and go with some of the early options mentioned. Don't go thru the same pain we have all experienced. I like led the cabelas Alaskan frame option. I had one for a few years. Worked great despite the squeak. They all squeak eventually but they do haul.

I'll second that, mines packed a couple out, buddy used it this year as I had my exo. I always have a back up, stuff happens. The field & stream will be fine packing in, coming out might be a different story. Most hiking packs are designed for low weight loads. 40-50 lbs max. Take some closed cell foam with (like a mattress pad) for your shoulders. And test it with 80lbs now before your faced with it later.
