Reprod or timber during a storm
« on: October 30, 2015, 09:05:39 AM »
I've got a stand in some older growth timber with ferns coverig the forest floor. The stand is about 400 yards from a 6 yr old clear cut and 200 yards from a large stand of reprod.

I've also got a stand in the reprod.

Hunting BT west side. Which stand would you hunt during this storm?

I'd hit the reprod, but then I don't like the timber in a storm after having falling trees and branches nearly take me out. With the bucks now starting to rut they will be busy chasing the does in the reprod.

I've been at my stand in the timber all morning and it's definitely been sketchy. I've seen some big branches comes down and heard probably 5 big trees come down not too far away. Just seems like the deer wouldn't want to be in here with all the commotion caused by the wind

:yeah: the deer don't like the timber for that same reason. Branches falling and to much noise. That's why I hunt 1-3 year old cuts during major rain, and wind.  :twocents:

especially this last week. Like fire dog said , they are after the does, and don't care how old the cut is.

Every deer (except 2) that I saw today was in the timber.  Every buck was only 20-40 yards inside the timber line next to younger reprod.

The deer are where you find them. Saw 2 in reprod first thing this morning during rain and heavy wind, another a little later bedded 30 feet from the road, and a3 point about 2:30 this afternoon. All in 3-4yo reprod.
