Blue Mountain Foothills West Whos heading out?!
« on: November 02, 2015, 04:08:15 PM »
I'm heading over to help the old man this weekend for a few days of hunting.  He is pretty excited about getting drawn and is getting older so he needed a packer.  It will be my first time back in that area in awhile.  Idaho consumes my hunting time so I haven't had a chance to go with the old man in awhile. I decided to take care of business early this year and go help him out otherwise he wouldn't do the tag justice  :chuckle:  He is used to shooting the first legal buck he sees but I have seen some brutes in the area and I want him to shoot a dandy seeing how his hunting days are nearing an end.  Bucks are getting frisky over here in CDA so I am hoping for some snow and some rutting over there.    Anyone else heading out?

We are headed that way Saturday my son has the blue mountains foothills east tag.  Whitetails took a bad hit from blue tongue this summer down that way the numbers we seen during modern seemed way down.  It is still a good tag good luck over there.

Biggest whitetail Ive ever seen was in the east tag area.  Out of Pomeroy, public land, 6 pt on top and eye guards.  That was 10 years ago though and it was elk season.

Had that tag last year, had a blast, saw lots of deer. Be patient... lots of average deer, if you can resist shooting one of them, there are some real nice bucks that will show themselves. This time of year, find the girls and the boys are not to far away! Good luck

Well me and the wifey drew the Foothills tag this year...unfortunately for me while I was putting us in for the group hunt, I didn't realize her west side elk season was at the same time...there were a lot of negotiations during that discussion..as it happens she was blessed with a nice whitetail during opening morning of general season..so that left me with my tag to fill.  After doing some scouting the weekend before the opener and only seeing a few does..I was a little worried about the area I had chosen to hunt..but luckily for me my buddy also had a doe tag and had agreed to hunt 3 days with even if he had filled his doe tag.  It never hurts to have an extra set of eyes!

I had mentally prepared myself to hunt hard for 6 days and not shoot a buck unless it was a nice 5pt or bigger (that is until the last day came and then the only goal would be to fill the freezer full of meat!).  Day one brought us seeing lots of small whitetail bucks and lots of does.  We also witnessed a really nice muley buck rutten a large group of does.  Mid afternoon we found a doe that wasn't running 100 miles/hr away from us and my buddy put the hammer down and got the job done!  After processing the doe and eating lunch we decided to drive around a little and look for areas we might hike and hunt later in the week.

As it happens we were on our way out to drop my buddies doe off at the butchers to hang..and we see 3 deer on the side of a hill.  All three of them ended up being bucks including the one in the picture.  Crazy enough we sat in the truck not talking about how I can get a shot off at him but actually talking about if I was going to shoot him.  Looking back it was a terrible conversation that probably shouldn't have happened...mentally I was thinking about the next day and what was for dinner that night.

After our conversation we both agreed that there was no guarantee that it would get cold enough in the next week or so to put the bucks in the rut and this was too good of a buck to pass up.  After a short hike I got into position and waited for him to turn broadside for a clean shot.  He finally moved into position..I squeeze the trigger and boom..the buck just stands there and looks back behind him towards one of the other deer...I jack another round in the chamber and drop the scope on him and boom..drop him in his tracks.  After the second shot 3 additional bucks, smaller than him, pop up and mosey out of the area...After realizing that the deer was actually only around 225 yds and I was estimated 300..I know why I missed the first time...I guess that's what I get for bow hunting the last 5 years!  Needless to say God truly blessed me with an amazing buck this year!

Congrats! Great buck.
