howling for coyotes
« on: January 19, 2009, 07:11:31 PM »
I just got a coyote decoy for xmas and my hunting partner has an fx5 with all the coyote sounds, what would be the best sounds in conjunction with the decoy?

I think it would depend on the season and the amount of dogs in your area. There is always the challenge howl, estrus chirp, hurt pup to name a few. They all have their time and place and could be enhanced by a decoy.

I wouldn't think you would have to do anything different (non-experience talking, here). I tend to howl first, which would establish that an incoming dog would expect such a decoy. Carry on with distress and other sounds, "as needed".

I'll be hunting sunday in an area I've never hunted but its private and reported to have a very high population of coyotes.

I would start off with a single lone howl or the estrus chirp or both, and sit and wait for about ten minutes, then go to the distress calls.  I try not to get too fancy with any other sounds until the end of the stand, where I am less likely to screw something up.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

I haven't had any luck with challenge barks. The kiyi, hurt pup, integration howl, female invite, and locator howl have all worked for me.  I think that using dist. anything works too, I have been getting a lot of coyotes interested in my dog with dist sounds, now if only I could get him to stay by the caller it would be perfect. :twocents:
