Remington 870 express Super Magnum 26" yes or no?
« on: November 03, 2015, 09:35:10 AM »
I have an 870 wing master from 1956 and it shoots 2 3/4 all day no problem but my girlfriend wants to get into waterfowl hunting and I figured I can use that as an excuse to get another shotgun while she gets my hand-me down. Walmart has a 870 express super magnum chambered in up to 3.5 with a 26" barrel and a camo wrap on it for $369. Does anyone have any input to if this is a sound gun and one I should get?

I got them for all 3 of my sons.....   no complaints at all.

we're not huge into birds, but with that gun we can chase doves to turkeys and every bird in between.

Its an 870 so it will get the job done no problem. However I have always thought the Expresses leave something to be desired. not saying they are bad guns by any means but after using a wingmaster for so long you can tell the difference that's all. My Home defense gun is an old converted Wingmaster. started out as a 30" fixed full choke barrel with weighted wooden stocks, it was from the 80s I think. I changed everything over to a new 18" barrel, magpul and synthetic furniture, side saddle, 2 shot extension and upgraded follower, best shotgun I own.

I brought my 870 home this morning and every inch of every part was soaking wet, not to mention some mud here and there.  That is when I was so happy I didn't have a more expensive gun.

Since I'm not a fan of pump guns, I would say no. The Winchester SXP is a 3" gun made in Turkey, the Mosseberg 500 is one made in the USA, my preference would be a Browning BPS but here again only in 3" chamber. I know a lot of guys that shoot 870s without any issues, I've had 5 only one worked and that was an older Wingmaster the other 4 would not cycle rounds well or just jammed in the chamber.
I you have to have a pump, stick with Mosseberg or Remington

Well I got the 870 about three weeks ago, and so far the gun operates well, still working on finding ammo that patterns well in this gun. The super X seems to be lacking. Any suggestions? Also picking up a improved cylinder choke. Hopefully that improves my hit%

I have a good luck with Kent fast steel #2's for ducks in my 870 express....Federal's also work well and both are inexpensive.......look up Rogers sporting goods (online) for great prices on shotgun shells

I say yes all day... I have had mine for probly ten years or so and I have full confidence in it with all weather situations. I've shot it wet, dry, iced over, and muddy.. Nothing fancy, but when you pull the trigger it will go boom.

I'm learning that It's not as easy transitioning from a 28 inch barrel you at 26 inch barrel.

I've had mine for going on 10 years with no real problems.  That's used in fields, freshwater, and saltwater
