49 Degree Late Moose Hunter is Older
« on: November 03, 2015, 09:12:25 PM »
My dad has a 49 Degree Late Moose Tag after 17 yrs .  He and his hunting Buddy of 40yrs + have been  hunting pretty hard for the First 3 days. The problem is My dads is 78 yrs old and can't hike 7 miles like he used too.
If anyone has any areas or ideas that you would like to share with me, that I can pass on to them that would be appreciated. He is not looking for a monster just a bull. I am planning on going over on Friday day to help as I have to work during the week.

I have the same tag and head over a week from Saturday. I have found a ton of tips on places to look by using the search function on this site....lots of folks that have experience in the area that are pretty specific about where they see/shoot moose.  I'd start there.  Also, I know you just posted, but I'm confident quite a few folks will offer suggestions in the next day or two.  Super friendly folks in this forum, so I'm sure help is one the way.

I have only been in the unit once for one day and didn't see any moose but saw a ton of sign around the ski resort. Sorry I don't have anything more specific at this time. Once I'm there and hunting- if he's still hunting- I can hopefully be more help.

All the best to your father on his hunt- I'm sure he'll have fun and get a good one.  Make sure he leaves me one!

He will probably see more moose by covering the unit in the vehicle, than stomping the woods anyway.  If he just keeps moving, he will get one. There are moose throughout the unit and you never know where you will see one. I've seen quite a few moose in the clearcuts up Winchester Cr and clearcuts above Power Lake, so he might check out those areas.

Yep- Those are good spots.  Run the roads up Winchester creek and check Smalle Creek area.  There were a pile of moose in there a few weeks ago.  I suspect they are still around.

We saw the most up on calispell pk. Theres lots of clear cuts up there to look at. That's where I ended up getting mine. I did call mine in but we also saw some in the road up there. This one was in the road up on boyer mt. Could have easily gotten him.

I would second the Winchester creek area. Take the Winchester cr rd off of Flowery Trail and drive up until you get past the houses and stay with the creek until you pass the wintering area and go another mile or two following the powerlines. Don't remember how far it is but there is a forest road that cuts off to the left and heads under the powerlines going kind of west, it just has a number, no name. It only goes about a half mile back and you cross under the powerlines and it dead ends at an old clearcut. Never been there and not seen a moose in that clearcut. For 10 plus years! the tree's are taller now, prob 20ft in spot's but go down the hill off the bank and it clears up a bit.

recently I went up to Chewelah peak and took the cottonwood divide road that goes up the back of the 49 ski area. I went up to the last gate and walked the service road across the ski area and saw 3 nice bulls right on the ski runs, if they get 1 and need help just holler at me and I'll go find em  :hello:

If you go up to Cusick and take the Tacoma creek drainage take a good look on the 2341 road.  Look for thinning operations where they are piling up little jack fir... the moose like to come in and browse the tops.  Cruising that entire drainage and up toward Calispell Peak would be my focus.

I hunted with them last night.  Showed them a different area.  They are hunting in all the right spots just not seeing any moose.  It will happen for them.  Great guys!

I would also look up the North Fork of Calispell Creek.  Concentrate on the clearcuts at prime time, mornings and evenings, and do a lot of driving during the day.  Watch for the willows with bent over broken tops.  Moose pull on them until they break, then feed on the tops, and that's an indication there's some around.  We're past the moose rut I believe, but cow calling should still work to bring in lonesome bulls, so they should do some calling where they are seeing moose sign.  My biggest tip is for them to just keep moving, daylight till dark and they will get one.

I'm not smart enough to get the picture that was texted to me. Transferred from phone to here. I forwarded the text to my buddy in Montana who has seen far more moose than I have. He said it looked like about 40 inch spread with split brow tines. Followed by ...... Pretty nice moose. I myself don't know anything aboot moose. I've only seen one ever and he was swimming across sprague lake. Perhaps tegantunadog will come back and give a detailed report. My uncle bob said they had real good help with the packing it out. So if anybody on here was part of that. Thanks a bunch.

The boys have had a real good fall, uncle Bob shot a dandy 6x6 bull with his special draw muzzloader tag and Gary got his moose add a 4 point buck for bobs 16 year old grandson and it's a trifecta. I remember vividly hunting with gary,my uncles and my grandad 30 years ago. Gary is a character.  Came in the sleeping room of the cabin with nothing more than a towel on at 5 am,night before he had been telling my great uncle that he stayed in shape by running in the buff. He woke Don up and asked if he was ready to go for a jog. It was 25 degrees out. The response is not type able. Hilarious!
