Birds around Walla Walla
« on: November 06, 2015, 08:12:31 PM »
My Brother-in-law is buying a house in Walla Walla (hopefully closes in two weeks). The Fam and I are planning to go spend a few days with them the week before Christmas. Neither of my kids (14 and 16) have had an opportunity to shoot a wild pheasant so we are hoping to get a little time in the field while we are there. A little different than the west side release sites  :chuckle:. The B-I-L did a little hunting last year but with no dog came home empty each time but really enjoyed the experience.
I am wondering if anyone knows a place or two around Walla Walla that "might" hold a couple birds in latter December that they might be willing to share? This is NOT a regular trip. I am not looking to move into anyone's honey hole, just looking for a place to walk the dogs and kids for a while. It is tough to get the kids out with school and sports so I figured I would ask on here and try to get them the best chance possible. Who knows maybe I can get the B-I-L to buy a real dog for next season (something tells me his rat dogs cannot get it done  :chuckle:) having a house he owns will help, and he can find those spots. Thank you!

I sure hope someone can help you out with this.

Not walla walla specific but the pheasants aren't overly populated IMO,I spent 2 weekends over there so far, opener and last weekend, saw 8 pheasants total only 3 were roosters. Valley quail on the other hand were thicker than fleas on a hound. Othello and Colfax is where I was at.Weather last weekend wasn't the greatest high winds and alot of rain.I've seen more roosters this year around my house which is 1 mile from a wetside release site, saw 4 this morning.I'd suggest getting on the WDFW site and reserving a hunt on their private lands reservation system. Some are quality hunts and some are youth hunts.

Once upon a time I lived in Pullman and I had a roommate from Oaksdale who wanted to tell me rattlesnakes around the Palouse were rare to non existent. How true is that in some of these areas around Colfax?

Iv'e never seen a snake around colfax or pullman, I have seen snakes around pomeroy, and it was on opening weekends in dry hot years. The snakes are all gone to bed now. I really would suggest the OP look into the reservation system for the quality hunt, those lands are only hunted a couple  days per week, gives the birds a chance to get back in there and not feel overly pressured.

Being from the area I will say Walla Walla has some decent pheasant hunting but if you get out of town you'll have better luck. Plenty of CRP feel free to hunt ground and a lot of nice farmers that will let you hunt if you just knock on the door. When you're getting ready to head east send me a PM I will hook you up.

Down along the snaken  near Pullman and just north in revere I have encountered rattlers.

Don't be afraid to knock on doors when you see a place with good cover. The worst thing that happens is they say no. You will find the birds or some good places to hunt the next time you go. Good luck and have a great holiday with your family.
Lead em if they're running.

Thanks for the well wishes Jagermiester, you do the same. I will let you know how it goes. The closer we get the better this trip is sounding. Hoping for a little snow just before the hunt.
