I use the hornady great plains bullet in my older cva .54.  Shoots great and I think its a 425gr chunk of lead.  They are pretty cheap too.

Most 1/48 twist will shoot the shorter bullets with out much of a problem even if you were to go to a sabot and copper clad bullet.

And actually for a back-up roll shooting an old fashioned patched round ball will get the job done also....

This table will give you some information.  Shooting T7 you do need to use a lubricated patch between the powder and the patch.  This helps protect the patch from the excessive heat of T7.

And again just for your information... this is a target I shot with a 54 Rene using a 300 grain XTP in a Nosler sabot.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I use the hornady great plains bullet as well.  It shoots great out of my renegade.

Shorthair15

Been to bust to any real thinking but this morning when I was looking for some left over 45x300 gr. XTP's - I think I have found the real answer to your question..

As you have probably read I have been doing a lot of 50 cal. sabotless shooting. And thanks to those big 50 cal. pistols that are on the market these days there is actually a good selection of 50 cal. bullets available.  Both Speer and Sierra offer a really decent hunting type bullet for this adventure.  And since I have not been shooting a 54 in ages - in fact I think I only have one left - I did not think of this until last night while watching football....

So that leads me to this for this

This bullet really qualifies - a short stubby 50x300 Deep Curl in an MMP 50x54 red sabot.  I am quite sure that your 54 and even my 54 will shoot this with very good accuracy and when it hits put a decent whoopen on what it hits.

Sierra also make 50x350 that would also do the job.

Also if you want a premium bullet that just might work also consider the Barnes 50x275 XPB in the red sabot.

So you/he with a 54 cal. living in Washington really do have some viable choices if you were to choose to shoot a sabot from the stately old Renegade.  Heck this might make those older sidelocks into a real modern elk slayer.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I wouldn't hesitate to use the round balls if I were you.

PowerBelt bullets and the Hornady Great Plains Bullet shoot the best out of mine. I 've had little luck in the accuracy department with sabots due to the 1 in 48 rifling twist. If you can find any T/C MaxiBalls or MaxiHunters (no longer made by T/C); they shoot very well, too. The BuffaloBullet Ballet shoots pretty good, but I think Dixie Gun Works is the only ready source.

With that twist rate (1 in 60), you may find a patched round ball is your only choice for any accuracy. The Great Plains HUNTER has more conical friendly
twist rate of something like 1 in 28.
