Late season White or Black tail.
« on: November 08, 2015, 11:29:31 AM »
What late season is worth going to hunt? White tail or Black tail?
This is what I call a target rich environment.

Whitetail!  Since I have a multi season permit still in my pocket, I might be trying both.  Hunt whities until it closes then back over her until the end of the year.

If you can do either I'd pick whitetail. They should be entering the rut and blacktails should be done for the most part.

Whitetails are easier and there is more public land to hunt.

Whitetails are definitely easier, much easier especially during the rut.

Whitetails. The rut should be starting. The ghosts will be done with the first rut.

I'd normally say whitetails because they are just getting into the rut but bluetongue has really taken a toll on the whitetail population over here on the eastside.  If you are planning on heading east you may want to reconsider...just a thought.

:yeah: I heard blue tongue hit hard. I'd stay wetside if I was you. Plenty of timber land to cruise.

Go with what you know best.   I would say they both have they own set of challenges, but saying one is easier than the other is not necessarily true.

Blacktails for me. I don't get to take a week off during hunting season, and even if I did, I'd rather be in the woods in 30 minutes than drive 5 hours. I've read blacktails are the toughest big-game animal to hunt, and I'm hoping it's true, because that would explain why I'm struggling with it, and because I really, really love being frustrated. By God, when I finally retire, I'm definitely going to try hunting whitetails in the NE corner or maybe in the midwest.

I don't now why you would consider traveling  all the way to the Midwest for whitetail Pope, the northeast is loaded!
My family owned property up there for years.
Those Midwest deer are ran ragged every year also.

My dad was born in Iowa and I've never visited the midwest so if I ever have some free time I'd like to make a hunting trip out there. On the other hand, my dad's sister lives in the NE corner. Two years ago I drove to Colville for my cousin's memorial service. It was like time traveling....everything about the place reminded me of when I was a kid and made trips to Cousin Mike's farm. Even the memorial service which was one of those open-casket, view the body for the last time events. Jeesh. This was followed by a trip to the cemetery where blue-haired ladies wearing their Sunday-best dresses tried in vain not to step on deer droppings which peppered the melting snow. I loved and miss Cousin Mike, but the whole time I kept thinking this place has a deer problem.

Very good points made.  It would be a long drive, but I would love to hunt some open country. I Mule deer hunt normally and that is wooded areas, which is going to be the same as black tail.  The other thing is Black tail area is small especially sense werehouser has made the tree farms permit only. Don't know of much public land now down in that area.

What is this about blue tounge?
This is what I call a target rich environment.
