High hunt north end of chelan
« on: January 20, 2016, 07:19:51 PM »
I have an area north of lacurne that I have been thinking of hunting the high hunt. So who has boated into that General area? The spot is going to be boat in only I am going to go in August to scout and hunt bear. Just want to hear stories of those who have done one of these hunts in the deep chelan mountains. I think it is the Clark unit 244.

Bring swim shorts...north of Lucerne is the lake...

Grade

PS. I've been to the south, east and west of Lucerne a bit...it all burned last year and you probably won't be allowed in there next year, and if you are you probably won't find much, except widow-makers...be careful up there.

As Grade says, it's All burned up. Good news is you have plenty of time to get into shape before the animals are back. My legs say stay away :chuckle:

I scouted out the area above Holden one year looking for the "secret area of big bucks".   Turned out it wasn't it.   We took the Lady of the Lake to Lucerne and then the bus to get to Holden.

Do you guys really think there won't be animals in the areas that burned this year? I have seen animals in prescribe burns in the afternoon of the day they started the burn. Also, I don't look for timber when hunting the high hunt. I look for alpine and I doubt that burned much. I would not worry about a burn one bit when it comes to the high hunt.

With the snows they have this year, winter kill, erosion, and all the widow makers (trail closures too) I would give this area a few years to settle down...yes, bucks are in burns right after they happen, even in "moon scape" type burns (check out the January issue of Successful Hunter Magazine for an article all about it, including some awesome Washington bucks killed in recent burns). But given all the other factors, there are better places for the high hunt this next year...

I'd give it a year or two.   It all burned and will be a beast.   It's straight up and down.  That's hard country.

If you really are looking north of Lucerne, you can take the Lady to Moore Point, or your own boat of course.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
