New to ducks
« on: November 11, 2015, 07:39:53 PM »
Hey guys I just finished hunter safety and am getting my small game license and waterfowl stamp. I have a 12 ga. With imp cylinder modified and full chokes. I'm going duck hunting this weekend for the first time.  I know I need to use nontoxic shot, but I'm wondering if there are any other regs I need to know about. Like what kinds of ducks can I shoot? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Looking at the waterfowl regs would be a good spot to look at for those questions

What choke and shot size would you recommend?

I mainly use a modified choke. Three inch #2's are what I mainly use.

3" #2 shot for ducks.  Get a copy of the regs for species and sex limits.  Try to shoot the boy ducks.  Good luck.

Please, oh please go with someone that has duck hunted before....   :o  And look at the regs.

Shot size and choke will depend on how you are hunting them.  IMO, 2's would be max size shot, 4's minimum.  I like 3's as a compromise between knockdown power and shot numbers. I do keep some 6's in case I need to swat a cripple, more shot is better.  If you are pass shooting, a tighter choke would probably be better, decoying, more open works.

Good luck.

Where are you gonna be hunting? I'll make sure to be far away... j/k we all started somewhere. Good luck and read the regs. It's pricey if you shoot something or too many than you're supposed to.

:yeah:
If this is your first time wing shooting, I'd have you put in a mod choke and even if pass shooting, wait till you can make out their Eyeballs before you take a shot.  With luck, whoever is taking you out will have you in a position to do that.
Hope its a memorable experience.
Congrats on completing hunter ED.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.
