Well the boy got the job done this Saturday about 20 minutes into the hunt. We had some buddies tell us they had been seeing cows in an area and to give it a shot. We were walking in at dark and could hear elk walking around. We get set up and the 1000's of questions start and I have to very quietly remind him that we are hunting, we need to be still and not talk for a while. That lasted 2 minutes. Within a couple minutes we could hear elk crashing toward us and he was set up on a stump. At a whopping 62 yards he dropped the hammer and down she went. Lots of hugs, prayers, ataboys and the job began. I have been blessed with many opportunities that some will never get to experience but I can say there is nothing better than spending time with kids in the outdoors. Does not matter if the tags are notched or your left with tag soup. Get out there and enjoy them every chance you get. The elk died right next to a bull carcass that was a year old.
