The Havalons are far more popular, and thus easier to find blades for. Those who own both seem to think a bit more highly of the Outdoor Edge. :twocents:

The only reasons havalons are more popular is that they came along first, and many people havent tried the outdoor edge.  Once i got one of the outdoor edge replaceable blade knives i gave away both of my havalons.  Simple and safe to swap blades in yhe oe without a pair of pliers, and the design of the blade holders make the blades sturdy, unlike the havalon blades which may break.  100% hands down get the outdoor edge.  Blades are plenty easy to find on amazon / ebay

Havalon has impressed me.  Done deer and elk with it.  One thing to mention, is that if your skinning for any kind of mount do not use one.  No matter how careful you are they are so sharp you will cut the hide!
I do not own an outdoor edge, so I can't comment on that.

I like them both and they each have they're place. Havalon being sharper and having some flexibility, Outdoor edge being sharp also and having more spine.
If i had to make a choice. I like the outdoor edge with replacable blades. Fits better in my hand, longer stronger blades.

I have the new Havalon Titan.  Best of both worlds and the only knife in the kill kit.  Used it on 4 pigs and 2 elk now.

I used the Havalon on my buck this year and was pretty disappointed.  There is no strength to it so you are limited in the work you can do. It's a pain to replace blades.  It is awesome to have such a sharp blade constantly.

I used the outdoor edge on my second deer and really liked it.  Same sharp blade, easy to change blades, and much more rigid for skinning and quartering.

I'd give the outdoor edge the advantage and the model  with the gut hook rules it also is sweet for skiing with the dull point.

I carry both a havalon and a traditional hunting knife.

May ditch the havalon though and just carry the traditional hunting knife now that I'm sharpening them with a work sharp belt grinder,  my hunting knifes are sharp now.  I never had a talent for a stone, not even a lansky, but I've got the work sharp down.

I don't plan on using anything other than the havalon any time soon. I've tried both side by side and the havalon works better for me. I've yet to have a problem changing the blade.

Have used both plenty.  Similar experiences as others.  Havalon blades break fairly easy, especially if you prefer to carry one knife for completely breaking down an animal...gutting, skinning, separating joints, boning out meat.  The outdoor edge is more rigid and has a more traditional folding knife feel to it, however, I've found that the little contour/ridge where the blade slides into the knife is problematic for some tasks, such as separating bone and slicing meat.  I love both knives, but I might lean slightly towards the outdoor edge for it's easy blade replacement and traditional folding knife feel.

I carry both. I favor the outdoor edge a lot more for all around work. I like the havalon for caping and finer work. I like the havalon a lot more with the new thicker blades. The 60xt blades break a lot easier with almost any flex. Now i carry both.

Good point.  Havalon is much better for caping.

I used the Havalonpiranta last year, worked up two elk and a deer with it including caping and turning the face. Worked great but needed a fixed blade for popping joints and working the hide from around the base of antlers. Used the Titan this year and it was perfect for me. I've never had an issue changing blades and usually go through 5-6 of them per critter to maintain a super sharp blade. Haven't tried the outdoor edge but know a few guys that run them and love them. Still wonder about popping joints with them as I don't carry a bone saw. I think you will be happy with either.

My only complaint about the outdoor edge is the release button, no matter what I always seem to grip it.  It is so annoying to me that I'll take the Havalon most of the time.  I usually have no problems breaking an animal down with either one.

I've been sold on the havalon. 2 bear, 3 elk, 4 deer... broke a couple blades but they are easy to change out. Wear cut resistant gloves :twocents:

I am a huge outdoor edge fan. Also love my havalon. Have used both for a long time. Pros to the havalon is how small and versital it is and you can carry a ton of blades without weighing down your pack. You manually put the blades in place on a fixed piece. Huge advantage when talking long term use without wearing a knife components out. The outdoor edge is a little bigger for easier handling and a little sturdier on the design for heavier leverage on a blade. But the outdoor edge has a internal part that clips the blade into place that wears out. And when cleaning an animal fat and such will gunk up inside the blade cavity and clog up the area for replacing blades. And outdoor edge knives have a tendency to have screws loosen over time that you have to tighten. Like I said I like both but after extensive use I would have to put my money on the havalon.
Maturity is when you have the power to destroy someone who did you wrong but instead you breathe, walk away, and let life take care of them.

I popped a lot of joints with the havalon w/o breaking a blade but I don't use it like a pry bar.  I just slice in the right spots then bend the joint to get the tendons in the middle with the tip of the havalon.

I like to split pelvis's in the field though and the havalon is certainly not up to that.  I could just tie and pull through but I've split them for so many years it's just my preference.

That's what I was going to say! I broke down my entire deer from start to finish (field dressed, skinned/quartered, and boned out at home) with one blade.

I got the Havalon Titan this year and will never use another knife. I pulled out the folder to cut some of the heavier joints, worked great.

Only complaint was last night when I was working on the head getting it ready for cooking this weekend, I did break 2 blades, but I learned quickly how much flex is to much flex and then had no issues. I don't know what people are saying about difficulty changing blades, I have no problem doing them by hand, I can see a pair of pliers being safer though.

I've used my Razor's Edge Pro (with the gut hook) on a deer and a couple of elk so far with one blade change. I actually had the Piranta in my pack also but it's just there because I have trouble parting with a knife.

Right. You don't "need" a knife to pop joints. Know what you're working with and you'll do fine with the Havalon. I've done 2 whole deer with mine and broke 1 blade. No saws, no nothing other than the havalon. I do not Like changing the blades on the Havalon. It's mildly terrifying. I haven't tried the outdoor edge one but maybe I should.

Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

I have both and I like neither. I use them for a little bit and get tired of them in a hurry. I always find myself in the pack grabbing the cutco. Far seperior knife that never dulls and never breaks!
Happiness is being in the woods!!!

A lot safer without a pair of pliers! Just the push of a button. I saw some place that havalon has a new tool out that is used for changing the blades. Looks like a credit card but a little thicker. You are not the only one they scare, so much so that they made a new tool cause they hear it a lot.

5 or 6 blades per animal :yike:  I just about do a whole elk with 1 blade.
Certainly doable with less... I figure if I am using a razor blade I might as well keep it razor sharp. I put the used blades back in the foil then back in the sheath then dispose at home.
