What do elk do during a storm?
« on: November 12, 2015, 07:14:07 AM »
I am headed to the coast this weekend and am wondering what the elk will do during the high winds and rain?

IMHO, the same thing they do in nice weather.  Eat, drink and sleep.

All the elk on the coast have already climbed onto the Ark... :chuckle:

Seriously though, ten inches of rain, 50 plus winds. I wouldn't worry about the elk, for safety sake stay out of the timber.

During storms on the coast over the last 15 years during archery they hide in the deepest darkest holes.  A agree "Watch out for that tree"

Find a nice 20 year old reprod patch with a more protected side, run around until you find fresh sign jump on it and go, keep doing that until you get into the elk.. good luck

My brother shot his on a day with torrential downpour and winds steadily blowing 20 - 30 mph in the middle of a wide open clear cut. It was bedded down near the draw while there were trees in the 6 - 8 ft range they were sporadic at best and gave little to no cover for anything let alone an elk. I usually see them like this in heavy storms, not sure if it's because that is where they want to be or I'm just not willing to follow them in the widow maker forest.

bumped this coastal Roosie out of some trees alongside a clearcut on top of a ridge just as the winds died down from that blast we had end of August.
Winds had died down to 20-30 and the rain had let up a little.

Rain, wind make for great conditions to find elk.  They seem to move more and are calm.  Get after them on stormy days!!
