7mm-08 vs 6.5 creedmoor

I am considering my next custom build. I am sort of twisted up between these two options. My wife and sister both have the 7mm-08 and they are sweet shooters. I am very intrigued with the 6.5 Creed too. I want something that I can stretch out there for fun shooting but it will also see some field duty. As I mentioned, we already have a 7mm-08 so components would be the same for two rifles. Ballistics seem pretty close between the two as well. Does the 6.5 have enough upside to go that route? Opinions and any supporting data welcome.

I am a 7mm-08 buff big time. Like you said similar ballistics. The BC on the 6.5's are a little better then most the 284's in the same weights. Really up to you

If going custom....consider the 6mm Creedmoor with a quick twist it'll spit heavies into infinity and beyond.

Both are cool calibers.

The truth is I've bought too many cool calibers and then I regret it (too many different components to keep track of).

I've cut way back on calibers I'll buy just for sake of ammo.

If you love reloading different stuff, that might not be an issue for you.

The 6.5 grendel in the AR platform is pretty awesome.  It kicks less than a .22.  Weighs a little though.

Mine's about 23 lbs.  It sure is a solid long range gun, though.

I know a guy that has put a few rounds through a Ruger Hawkeye SS that has a trigger in it and it is a very nice shooting rifle.

I dont shoot either round but what i would say is uniformity in caliber and make are a good thing. Id probably stay with the 7mm08 and look strongly at the same make as the other 2 (if they are the same) this would be doubly important to me if they were mag fed.

 Both my kids shoot the 7mm-08 very well, Ruger M77 Hawkeye Compact. If seriously considering one let me know and you can borrow one to have them try.

H20, my wife shoots a weatherby vanguard compact and my sister a rem model 7. Both are great shooters but if given the choice I would pick up the model 7 and never look back.

sorry I did not get back sooner.  my granddaughter is a small woman at 5 feet in hi heels and about 110-120 lbs.    she really likes the gun she has and likes shooting it.  have no idea what brand it is but will find out.  that reminds me that she borrowed my 243 for about 5 years and now I get it back and I think she put a better scope on it.   mike w

7mm-08 hands down. That due to the availability of ammo.  Great caliber to reload for as well.  As for a weapon for a youth I think the Mossberg is great, low cost, comes with a stock extension for when they grow.  Accurate, light weight and an adjustable feather trigger (accu-trigger clone). My daughter is 20 now and has taken 5 deer out to 300 yards with hers.  Model 7 and X-bolt are also great in 7mm-08, just 2x the cost of the Mossberg 100.

Browning A-Bolt Composite Stalker, 7mm-08. Excellent rifle. Carried one quite a bit on my elk hunt this year. When my wife hunted with me, she wanted it back. I have the same rifle in .270win, they are great.

For sure....He will love it. Only reason we did not go with SS, they did not have them on the shelf when we bought our rifles. The slight palm swell, and overall fit and finish makes a very attractive rifle.

Mine is <10# with glass and I could shave off that too as I did not do it as a lightweight build.  Glass change alone I could probably drop at least 1#.  Then change out the free float to drop a little more..

And yes recoils like a 22, known elk killer to 400yrds.

I've got 2, a Remington 700, and a TCR 87 single shot.  Both shoot 140's really well.

I like the MV of the Grendel and the 123 grain boat tail bullet in the Hornady A-Max. It's certainly not a firearm you want to lug around the woods, but from a stationary position, it's a deadly accurate firearm.

These are both great calibers.  I give the nod to the 7mm-08.  My 13 year old daughter shoots a Savage youth in 7mm-08.  I wanted to develop a low recoil load for her.  Used a 140 Nosler Accubond Long Range and filled the case with US869.  1900 fps at the muzzle.  Almost no recoil.  Wicked accurate.  She shot her first deer this year using this combo.  The ABLR is designed to expand down to 1300 fps.  I can tell you at 20 yards it punches right through the front shoulders of a whitetail doe.  DRT.  One happy little first time deer hunter.  And one proud daddy.

I have the Ruger American in 7mm-08, and it shoots 1/2" groups at 100yds all day long, I'm loading using 140gr Accubonds and Varget.

I love my Savage 11 7mmo8. Accurate minimal recoil.
Wyoming deer hunt for first animal. 245 yds laser range, 120 gr Barnes ttx hand load DRT.
If you don't reload Barnes 120 gr Vor-tx would be my next choice.
Minimal meat damage, but wham in the dirt.

You could lighten it up by deleting that optional hammer, although it looks to be a fiberglass handle. So there's that.
