Stainless Steel and Accuracy
« on: November 07, 2015, 11:16:25 AM »
I got myself a new 270 WSM rifle with a stainless steel barrel but I noticed that it hates being dirty, what I mean is, at 100 yards the first 3 shots are touching, the second string of 3 shots are 1.5 MOA after that it keeps opening up to where I basically stop shooting and call it a day for this rifle. I let the rifle cool down the barrel between shot strings. I get home and clean the sucker well and the next time a the range it will do the same thing.
Anyone experience anything similar to that?? is it the barrel??, the glass?? or just the dirt??
I have a 300 WSM, a 25-06 and an AR-15 in 7.62x39 that are not stainless steel and have no issues with their accuracy while "dirty"
Any advice??

Something doesn't sound right.  Have you ever tried shooting it and then not cleaning it and taking it out the next day and see what happens?

I think it's more because of the barrel heating up.

Maybe the barrel just isn't broke in yet?   :dunno:

Barrel could be a copper mine if it wasn't broken in properly.

This worked wonders on a CZ 204 that would foul out after just a few shots.

I had a blued rifle that did that.
If it's not from heat, then have a gunsmith scope it.
Mine was a bad factory barrel.

Are the action screws torqued properly?

I second not cleaning and go out and try again.

Could also be recoil aversion(flinch).

First shot or two are the critical ones. As long as those are on the money not much to worry about. Slim lightweight barrel may be affected more by heat or do a good copper cleaning like stated before.

I want to thank everyone for all the tips given!!
I went back to the range today with the dirty rifle from previous shoot last Saturday, set target...3 shots..... able to cover the holes with a quarter.......WTH?? I am flinching as I keep shooting is my guess!!! it's just a 270wsm for crying out loud!
I have no issues with my old 300wsm...I don't get it!!

WSM's do warm up quickly.  And every barrel is different.

You could run a small power grid on the heat coming off my old .325WSM...

I have a factory stainless barrel on my 30-06 and sometimes I go 50 shots between cleaning with no difference.  Then, I clean it and no difference in POI.  I did go through a crazy break in period where I cleaned and copper cleaned after every shot for 20, then every 3rd shot for another couple boxes.  After that, I never pull the copper out.  I can clean it with 3-4 patches now.

Might consider a trigger job. Could be you just get off target with amount of travel.

Good!  Now stop cleaning the barrel before you really ruin it.  Your gun will tell you when it is dirty and that won't be for a very long time.
