first spike (sunday opening weekened)
« on: November 13, 2015, 10:33:57 PM »
opening morning was a bust my 7 month pregnant wife and I, we were sitting on the edge of a grass field not a single elk pushed by us at all there was shooting no stop all day above us I told her we had to just wait it out something would show up  and all sudden mule deer came cutting threw the field a with one really nice buck, wife says to me to bad it wasn't deer season. The wait began no elk and she whispers were hungry I asked if she could hang on for another half hour she wasn't to happy about that. She had already gone threw my treats in my pack, after the half hour passed we hiked back to camp had lunch and went back out to see nothing . Sunday morning came and I knew I had to cover some ground, the wind was blowing hard and raining sideways I told her that uncle ray would sit her in a sheltered area and I was going to drive up and come down from the top checking all the sheltered areas pushing anything there way. I get on top of the ridge its blowing 50 miles an hour I get out the rains beating off my face I think to myself am I really about to do this.  every hunter I seen that morning was in there pickups with there heaters on . I told my self screw it go big or go home, well after the first 100 yards I was soaked from waste to my feet pushing on I come to the first area working it nice and slow no elk but it was loaded with fresh sign. I began to work my way back to were my wife was sitting slowly working my way threw a burnt blow down area 100 yards down below me there stands a yearling calf I think to my self there has to be more elk. I put up my new vortex to work and start glassing there's another calf there's momma bedded down so I continue to glass looking for more elk I go back to what I thought was momma then glass some more the I started to focus on the bedded elk that's about the time he turned his head all I could see were spikes then I lost it I grabbed my gun and barreled down on him took a breath bang and he just lay's there I reload bang still laying reload bang he stands up. That morning I had only put 3 shells in the gun so as I am digging in my pack for more shells thinking he would take off running I get it reloaded he is standing there stumbling and with what I herd about the clockum I wasn't going to risk anything I pulled down aimed for his neck squeezed it off and he dropped in his tracks. I guess  the three follow up shots were never needed as I double lunged him on the first shot then spike fever took over the next two. I know people say don't shoot them in there bed but at a 100 yards come on that's a chip shot with a rifle plus if you miss they have to stand as you reload.
To me its about the future

My biggest fear is when I die, my wife will sell all my guns for what I said they cost me!     ;)
