Good news, Bad news
« on: November 14, 2015, 06:18:44 PM »
Good news; today I recovered a trap that went missing last spring, 200 yards from where it was set. I am assuming it had 2 footed help getting there. trap is still in usable condition.
Bad news; it had a mink skull in it. not sure if the mink was in it when it was tossed there or if it got in there later.

Now before anyone goes off the deep end, I found the trap in the middle of a pond with no structure near it and 3/4 buried in the mud. And I had set no traps in that specific pond as I was setting upstream.

Anyway I got one of my traps back today, wonder where the other 2 went last spring.....

It was set upstream and it ended up in the pond.  Possible the current took it there?

cat, trap ended up in the middle off a pond. Can't see a cat doing that.
Coon or canine, they are in the area but the trap is in perfect condition and the skull was still in the trap.

There are 2 footed holes out there that do stupid stuff and your case it sounds like it was a waste of a nice mink hopefully you can find your other 2

cat trap in the middle of the pond. Does sound like some ant-trapper pitched it. I bet the others are out there too.

Very glad you found the trap. Hope you find the other 2. I've been worrying about mine with mf deer going on here. Seen lots of diffrent rigs at my parking area but no one has messed with anything yet. I look forward to mid dec when the areas slows down to just the shed hunters.

is it possible ice took it out?

early spring pond ice can float as runoff raises the pond levels, then thaw and drop your trap

He said it was a CAT trap. Not likely to be set in the water for the ice or high water to move it.

I've said this before but will repeat myself. I wire my trap to something. If it shows up missing you know darn good and well someone took it and save time looking for it. High water, ice, a large animal or what ever may move it but you can follow the wire to the trap and they don't go far.

Bruce, it was a 5x5x24 colony trap. One poster mentioned maybe a cat took it, not where it was set not where it was found.

KFHunter, no ice last year in march and very little high water.

Ok, I stand corrected, water set all the more reason to wire it to something. Believe me I would have lost a lot of traps to high water if I didn't wire them to something.
Seems like a lot of trouble but it is peace of mind when one does go missing. Had a swim through go missing and you could see where someone took the wire off. I would have spent many hours looking otherwise.
Last year I foolishly neglected to wire up some cat traps. One I was sure was stolen but it turned out a cougar had made off with it. The other a bear had took off with it. I got them back but spent a long time looking.

i been doing this to all my traps. Even the colony traps for rats.  At first it seemed like a pain but now it's just one of the steps of making a set for me.
