Best bet for walk-in hunting in puget sound area?
« on: November 15, 2015, 07:34:38 AM »
Although I'm mostly an upland hunter these days, I used to be a very avid waterfowler, and still like to pop a few caps each season.  This nasty weather has my mind turning to ducks.  I'm from Vancouver originally and now live in Tacoma.  I still don't know where to go for walk in hunts anywhere around here since I don't have a dog, and my boat is a white 15' bayliner.  Not exactly a duck boat.  Where are some decent shallow water areas a guy can walk in and have a chance at some birds?  The other option is to drive all the way down to Ridgefield refuge and get in line to hunt after 10am.  Thoughts?

This is my first serious season, so take that into account.

Most, if not all of the walk in areas are fine for a guy with no boat.  Every once in a while you find a deep pond, but a telescoping pole solves that problem.

My advice would be to get out there and check out the sites.  Grab your gun, some decoys and have at it.  You can research them online, but until you put your boots on the ground you don't really know what is there.

The popular sites are similar to Ridgefield in terms of pressure, but if you really want a duck you can get out there at 3 am and get a spot - or wait until spots open up as you mentioned.
