Rifle replacement stock question
« on: November 18, 2015, 05:22:12 PM »
I have a Winchester model 70 30-06. It has a crack that starts high on the stock at the barrel and swopes underneath down to the trigger. Sorry if the pics don't show it well.

I don't have much knowledge. So I'm wondering if I  should replace it? If so, where should I look for one? Is the blind magazine easily converted if necessary for the new stock?

Thanks for your help and advice in advance.

from my experience replacing the bottom metal for one with a hinged floorplate to fit a different style stock is about $150 if you order from numrich. You may be able to find a used stock or a like new takeoff stock cheaper.

Check out Boyds Stocks, you can get a nice drop in replacement for $100.00. Nice stocks, I have two , one on a Winchester and one on a Mouser.

Yup, replace it.

You can go wood or synthetic.  Boyd's is one place for wood;  for synthetic Bell Carlson is most expensive, Hogue is around 120
Progressives are coming for your guns.
What are you going to do?

Well me, I do not have any guns, gave away or sold them 15 years ago.

If you want a really good synthetic stock- McMillan.

Bell & Carlson are cheap compared to them.

Thanks all. I've seen those stocks you all are talking about. Just wanted to make sure there weren't any I was missing.

What about the blind magazine? Can it be covered if need be?

I've replaced a few of mine over the years with stocks from Richards, they all have turned out to be very nice. http://www.rifle-stocks.com

Manners makes a nice aftermarket stock too. Worth checking out

Second vote for McMillan, put one on my left handed Model 700 in .270 and really like it. Will be doing the switch over to a removable magazine soon (available from Brownells).

FYI Boyds has had some hefty price increases the last 6 months, I did not see any that were $99 anymore.  I went to get a stock for an Axis and it was $144 plus shipping before adding any potential options.

Third vote for McMillan, have a blue, grey and white marbled stock on my Model 70 30-06 and love it.  Manners also gets high praise for their stocks but generally the only ones the keep readily available are Rem 700 models.
