Missing hunter near Royal City

My wife saw the story on the news the other night.  She keeps pushing for me to get one of those gps beacons or something.  She gets nervous every time I go hunting alone.   I would have to think after reading this story, it may not be too bad of an idea.  Does anyone know how long the battery life would last on one of those?

Suppose to be 3 months with the power on.  3 days if SOS is activated.  Not sure how the message use affects battery life.

If it works like a cell phone they can. The only way to make your cell phone untrackable is to remove your battery.

I wonder if it was out of a tree stand or down an embankment while walking in/out   


I sure hope he didn't suffer,  RIP sad deal.

Advisory: Body found – believed to be that of missing hunter, Thomas Steig, of North Bend.
Dear Tom Jones,
Near Royal City, Wash (25NOV2015): A body, believed to be that of missing man Thomas Steig, age 55, has been found. His body was discovered around 9:45am this morning, just south of last known cell phone tower coordinates near Crab Creek, west of Royal City. Steig was reported missing when he didn’t return from a one day hunt on November 20th.
While official cause of death has not been determined, it does appear that he fell. There is no indication of foul play. His body is now in the care of the Grant County Coroner’s Office pending an autopsy. His family has been notified.
Nearly 100 staff and volunteers from Fairchild AFB, Grant County Search and Rescue, Mounted Posse, Grant County Fire District 10 and 11, Department of Fish and Wildlife, Spokane Sheriff’s Office, Grant County Sheriff’s Office, and numerous civilian volunteers have been on the ground, on horseback, ATV/ORV since Saturday. Civilian aircraft volunteered for the search as well as a helicopter from Spokane Sheriff’s Office, and a plane from Fairchild.
Sheriff Tom Jones said, "This is the saddest possible outcome for everyone involved in trying to bring Mr. Steig home to his family. Our sincerest condolences to his family and friends for their heartbreaking loss.”

What a horrible tragedy for his family.  I read they believe he fell from an 80-foot embankment.  Could happen to any of us.  Prayers of comfort for his family, and thanks for all the search and rescue crew.  Make sure you give extra thanks for your family tomorrow!

Hopefully that means it was reasonably quick.  Wife walked off one backwards while glassing a deer years ago.  She got lucky and only cracked the back.  Happened so quick and by surprise...on solid ground one moment and the ground was gone the next.  Could happen to any of us so easily.
