First Canvasback drake!
« on: November 25, 2015, 05:17:24 PM »
I've dreamed of bagging one of these for years, and have been taunted by them for years. They have caught me off guard when they show up as quickly as they disappear-I swear they spray water like a fighter jet on the deck as they buzz the decoys at Mach 10, they've circled just barely out of range a million times only to bug out. Well yesterday was the day, after getting set up really late (the joys of working graveyards) the snow really started coming down, the big heavy flakes, naturally I forgot my camera-the scenery was awesome. It wasn't long before a flock of 8 birds materialized through the heavy snow, visibility was about 50 yards or so, as soon as they were in range I could tell they were bluebills-except for one tubby bird in the back, my buddy broke the silence and splashed a drake and a hen bluebill, that tubby bird broke off and as soon as it turned I saw the distinguishable noggin-canvasback! I was able to get a bead on him before he hit the afterburners and bugged out and manage to get a bluebill as well. Those were the only birds we saw all day but it was an awesome day!

Nice work!  Generally very good eating birds too. Diet is typically aquatic celery and tubers.

Thanks guys! I took this one straight to the taxidermist, but I was fortunate to get a canvasback hen on the same lake about 3 years ago and it was absolutely delicious!!!! I love hunting the west side you never know what is going to fly by!
