Hydrogen peroxide (what and where to purchase)
« on: December 01, 2015, 11:49:41 AM »
I'm doing a Euro mount on my first deer. I've degreased with Oxy Clean and most odor is gone. I'm following directions from this Youtube instructional video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lj7DtfsmaA

The whitening process suggests submerging the skull in a diluted hydrogen peroxide liquid at a low boil. I have only one skull to do. What commercially available hydrogen peroxide product should I use? Where can I find it locally?

I promise, I've done some research and struggled to find answers. I'd like to hear from those who have used liquid hydrogen peroxide, or since I only have one skull, would it be more economical to purchase a paste from a salon?

Thanks in advance,

Pope

Hair dresser.

I just did a euro mount. I got a bleaching kit from a beauty supply store. Suprisingly, it sounds like it is common for people to go there and get them for this purpose. I did add poroxide (walmart) to the kit though.

Not the same. You need at least 40 volume if not 60 volume hair dressers peroxide.  The stuff you get at the pharmacy is not the same and not strong enough.  Volume # are not % numbers
Get these 2 products from a hairdresser (50-60 volume is better) and you will get professional results.  Mix the 2 in a paste so it isn't runny, use a long handled brush to get inside the nasal and brain cavities, paint on, leave in a warm spot for a couple of days, rinse and done!  Degreasing is the MOST important part of it all.  You can get it really white and have it all ruined in a couple of weeks when the fat that you missed leeches out.  :twocents:

Mighty white!

I used to use the 3% store bought stuff, after de greasing for a while. It worked pretty good. I now use the 35% stuff, they turn out whiter. Still not quite like the pros but pretty darn close

Yep, beauty supply store.  Peroxide you buy in the store is about 2 percent.  I used the Clairol Plus 40 solution, it was a heavy liquid and I painted it on with small brush.  Did a number of coats over a few days, results were pretty darn good, was proud of my first attempt.  As for it being common, I would agree with that also.  When I bought mine, yes I was wearing a camo jacket, the nice lady said..... you must be doing one of those head mount things aren't you?...

The guy in the video I linked used something like this:

http://www.sears.com/super-star-liquid-developer-40-volume-1-gallon/p-SPM6358686403?hlSellerId=9578&sid=IDx20110310x00001i&kpid=SPM6358686403&kispla=SPM6358686403

He diluted 1 gallon of the peroxide with 3 gallons of water and claimed to reuse this solution to do dozens and dozens of heads (he's a pro).

Put hydrogen peroxide inna bowl. Next step paper towels. Take em one by one and soak em in the hydrogen peroxide and lay them over the skull. Do this until the skull is mummified with 2 layers of towels soaked in peroxide. Then wrap it in plastic wrap to trap the moisture. Let's it sit for 3 days and it turns out great. No boiling needed.

I bought the 30 volume from Sally's. Creme style and painted it on. Then wrapped in plastic. After that was done, I put it front of a heat lamp. Rotating it every 45 minutes. After all sides went through the rotation, I let it sit over night.

Thanks everybody for your advice and sharing your experience. Photos of your projects look great, and I hope mine turns out so nice. I started this project 5 days after I tagged this buck and kept him cold, so his color is already good. I'll be sure to post up some photos when he's complete.

I use 40 volume peroxide. My wife gets it for me from the beauty supply store since she is a licensed hair dresser she gets a discount. I paint it on and wrap it in cellophane. Then I stick it in the sun for a day. Then rinse off peroxide. Repeat if necessary.
