Grinder--Cabela's standard Commercial vs Carnivore?
« on: December 27, 2015, 09:40:30 AM »
Anyone here used the new Carnivore model? Both models seem to be pretty comparable. Carnivore has the ice pack but I see now you can order a ice pack for the commercial model also. I have used the 3/4 hp commercial before and it's a great grinder and the 3/4 hp would be all I need.
 Also Cabela's has the best sale of the year for grinders going on until the 6th of Jan.

Any info on the carnivore would be appreciated.

Thank Bobcat, I did read that but was hoping for some "hands on" experience. Might be too new of a product for any members to have yet.  :dunno:

We have the next to largest Cabela's grinder, it has been very good so far, grinds as fast as I can feed it, takes about 10-20 minutes to grind a whole deer twice. Sorry I have no experience with the new carnivore.

I own the original. But from my guess the new one is just a slight designed change from original.  I think they did this for two reason,
1. They are slight improvements( I was already using my own icepacks to keep mine cool), which helps they sell new ones to folks who already have them.

2. I think it helps them with warranty  issues also.

1.5 hp carnivore owner here

I love it,  did a huge boar hog and not a single issue arose even though I accidentally tried to grind a knee cap or something off the hog.  It stopped the grinder dead in it's tracks, I hit reverse and it backed up then I hit forward and *crunch* but it kept on chugging.  Smoked a bit though, not the motor, but the end where the meat comes out was smoking a bit.  I kept on running another 100lbs through and didn't realize there was bone in there until clean out  :o   Couldn't imagine a bone in there I was de-boning but figured it must have been a knee cap or something similar.  It was a loose round bone.

Inspected all the parts and you couldn't tell it ever hit anything.  The knife didn't strip the square hole so I'm good to go

The ice pack was underrated, it kept the grinder frosty cold which is fantastic to prevent the meat from gumming up (warm) and getting stuck.

I just picked up a carnivore grinder and say that it is pretty much the exact same grinder with a few improvements. Motor sizes and torque is the same.  Difference is the ice packs (which really help) and the fan on the back to keep the motor cool.  This also helps with motor performance.  Heat is bad for motors and meat

Although I have not had the opportunity to use it yet, I picked up the 1 HP Carinvore with thr free foot pedal on sale during December.  Several improvements as mentioned above plus a built in parts tray and carrying handle.

I called Cabelas customer service and was then transfered to product information.  The person said when they had training this new product, it had already been out in use for sometime at numerous butcher type shops prior to it's consumer release.  Cabelas essentially told the shops to subject it to whatever heavy use in an effort to try to break it.  None did, break it that is.  The tech also said the the Carnivore it is a big improvement on the existing stainless commerical version.  He said he would personally opt for the new one based on what he knew.

Thanks for all the input!

Cabelas now has the commercial on sale for $20 less than the carnivore.   :dunno:
I ordered the 3/4 hp carnivore anyway because I liked the new features. Guess I'm going to have to buy some pork so I can play with it.

Thanks Again!
